Update rumors

My friend who's a manger at a Sprint store sent me an e-mail that said....
"...there will be a software update coming out soon that will increase the battery life by about 35%, so check periodically for updates."

I'm assuming this means it will fix the message issue. Anyone else hear anything?

They are going to release an update that takes the battery from 1500mAh to 1800mAh....

Just kidding. I am sure it's the Messaging fix, possibly with other little bugs or memory leaks closed as well.

They really need to release this. It's been several weeks and I'm sure they knew about it before the release anyway, as the Eris on Verizon ALREADY has a memo out to give it an update, the day after it released...

Why are you guys not taking this with a grain of salt. First of all my mother who knows a priest who talked to my school teacher who once worked at sprint over heard someone talking about an update coming out that will make the screen bigger. Come on guys please until we hear anything this is just rumors because of the droid update coming soon, so hence we speculate. I'll give you some facts. Will an update come out before 2.0 that will fix some problems YES. WIll an another update come out one more time before 2.0 Yes. Also my teacher smells

...and he said "rumor" in the thread title.

True but he said his friend who's a "MANAGER" at a sprint store sent him an email saying there will be an update coming soon. That is not a rumor, but s statement that he believes is true. If my friend sent me a email saying his friend got shot. I don't say i heard a rumor my friend has a friend who got shot. If he says something and then someone in another forum reads this and says i heard from this and that then it becomes a rumor. I like to squash that from the Root(hehe) before it spreads unless we have actual facts.

Geesh Aldo, why r u going so hard on this one? The OP made sure to put RUMOR in the title, which probably means he knows how Sprint employees and their info can be. Sometimes they are right but usually they dont have a clue.

With that said this would be a nice update to have. Tho i honestly would prefer they just focus all their effort on getiing 2.0 out to us

Well I just spoke to an Advanced Engineer in Sprint's Tech department (issues with email)
And I asked while on the phone with him about any updates. He told me we'd have 1.6 before the end of November. And that 2.0 will come out as quickly after that as they can ready the Sense UI to work with it.

So maybe the 1.6 release will include Said battery mod, duh.

HTC has already made an official announcement that the Hero will not be getting 1.6 and going straight to 2.0.

HTC (htc) on Twitter

I'm on the phone with Andrew at Sprint right now and he says as of Yesterday Sprint is releasing 1.6 to address many problems and bugs. So unless your information is more current than yesterday, you're incorrect. a day late and a dollar short.:)

Sprint is not the manufacturer of the phone. They have no control over what OS the phone is running. That is completely in HTC's ballpark

Sprint support is notorious for being completely ignorant of their own phone's development status and issues. I'm going with the official announcement from HTC over a Sprint technician that has no authority to make press releases.

You do that.

Of course Sprint IS THE ONE to release the updates. So they WOULD know if the engineering dept. is loading software onto a server for release. WE.

I stopped at my local Sprint store yesterday on my way home from work to try to pick up an adapter so I can use my wired headset while HTC & Sprint get their act together and fix the Bluetooth memory leak issue. The place was packed and I had to wait in line to ask if they even sold such a thing (they didn't).

Anyway, the two guys in line in front of me were both there to return their Heros before the 30 day period had lapsed. Both liked the device but were fed up and done waiting for a fix.

Now if only two people are doing this same thing at each of the Sprint stores (not to mention the Best Buys and Radio Shacks and other Spring vendors), then there are thousands of Heros being returned right now while Sprint drags their heels. I say "Sprint" instead of "HTC & Sprint" because HTC has apparently done their job but Sprint is holding things up.

I've only had my Hero for a week, but I'm already frustrated. As far as I'm concerned, they should have had these problems patched already. I'm going to stick with the Hero for now because I like the form factor better than any other Android device on the market, but the Phone needs to be FIXED before my 30 days runs out or it will end up on that big pile of returned phones too.

HTC and Sprint have confirmed there will be a patch to fix many of the bugs before the 2.0 update is rolled out. Maybe that is what your technician is confusing with the 1.6 update.

While the rumor mill is cycling in full force and hopes are getting dashed, lines getting crossed, I can't help but think that Sprint has a vested interest in making sure they 'do it right' with their first Android handsets. As such, they're taking their time and choosing the safe bets.

Unfortunately that leaves some of us more avid consumers feeling a little put out and alienated. To them, it's the nature of the game - they can do it right (hopefully), or do it fast. I'd much rather see right.

With the winter shopping season rolling in quickly, it's certainly in their best interest to iron out all their concerns and push out an update before Christmas, and ideally before the black-Friday shopping rush when a lot of handsets are going to be purchased and put on 'hold' in a box for a month.
