Torn...EVO and iPad???

This thread has slowly morphed into an all out OS war lol. I think it is best to answer the OP original question and give him some clarity in this matter.

OP- Both devices have its pros and cons. I think you have to take a moment to really see what your going to be using the devices for. Reading through this thread, you have given us the impression the your iPad is truely irreplacable. If that is so, the transition to the EVO in simple terms will be: "a let down."

I am an android fanboy, even though, I've owned every Apple product that have been released to date: including the iPhone 4G. Each devices met my needs but I always find myself in a situation where I wanted more. The HTC EVO offered me the custimization which the iPhone didn't.

A few days ago, I took the plunge and purchased the iPad. Right after, I decided to take a trip to Vegas for 4th of July. I thought it would be true test if i would keep it or not.

After 4 days, these are my thoughts. I think the iPad is honestly a great multimedia machine with a combination a strong suite of productivity. This was the utlimate companion for my niece and nephew. I was able to keep them quite while driving for 5 hours in the beating sun. It was perfect having this device with me while sitting out in the balcony of my hotel sipping my drink during the wee hours of the night after losing a whole lot of money from a guy that f***ing caught a lucky 4 in the river giving him a three of a kind beating my Jack King pair.

I feel the best thing about the iPad's is the battery holding a charge for the entire day. This is after watching 2 movies, reading magazines, and having the kids play games throughout the entire day while we were in the hotel. It literally stayed on for more then 10 hours of constant usage which in my mind is, "mind blowing." On top of this, the sheer size and weight of this make it so easily portable that it is a joke not take it around with you. I have all my textbook for classes uploaded, 30 gigs of movies and television shows on it, and a good 10 gig of applications with a few of my pictures. I write my reports if I need to with a combination of the small thin apple keyboard which pairs with this perfectly.

So I fully understand why you are contemplating about having to give up your iPad. Ultimately, no one will be able to convince you to do one or the other. But in my honest opinion, both devices are irreplaceable.

Convertible tablet with a real OS > iPad.

I have both an Evo and an iPad, so I'll weigh in too. I dislike Apple, but I love the iPad. I bought the 64GB one without the cell plan on purpose. I travel a lot and was surprised to find I could ditch my netbook and pick up my work emails (through a web browser) just fine on the iPad. Much nicer to use the iPad then a Blackberry.

In the rare instances where I find myself without a Wifi connection, I tether the iPad to the Evo. It's several orders of magnitude slower than a Wifi connection but still quite servicable.

The Evo and iPad make a great combination. You can't say that about the iPhone, because the iPhone won't tether with the iPad by design. That is really dumb IMHO.

For the iPad haters, I will tell you what it's for: it's for surfing the internet while you watch a TV show your wife wants to watch, or keeping you amused on an airplane. That's pretty much it, but it really excels at those tasks. My dream is to convince my wife to use one too. That way, we can sit next to each other, and still only communicate through emails. Perfect relationship :)

And I can do this better/more efficiently with a netbook convertible....

Not the entertainment part. The iPad is much faster than my Toshiba netbook (which has great battery life too), but for playing movies and TV shows and games, the iPad wins hands down.

If you had to get real work done though, the netbook wins.

I disagree. Go spend the same amount you spent on an iPad on a netbook, and see the huge difference that makes. It'll be faster, have more storage, and more capabilities.

All such apps are not even comparable to their PC counterparts, and require the usage of aggravating workarounds for syncing. Also, seriously, a bluetooth keyboard? Or even the docking one? Why bother even bringing the iPad at that point? I'll just take my laptop, it'll end up being LESS bulky, and it'll run Excel. The full Excel.

I agree, if you want to run Excel then you need a laptop or desktop at the present time. But for overall usage, especially traveling? I'll take an iPad ANY day of the week over a laptop when it comes to in flight use. It's way more convenient and someone pushing their seat back in front of you won't cramp your screen viewing the way a clamshell design can.

Because it's accessible, not because it's featureful.

So people are only using an iPad because it's accessible? LOL...really? Please. People don't use something unless it works for them. You are in denial that for millions of people, it works just fine.

If you want to get a Pages document off of the iPad, you're forced to use Apple's terrible online service, or the horrible iTunes USB sync interface.

NOT true. You can email yourself the file. And which "terrible online service" were you referring to? Mobile Me? Or share via iWork.com. Cause that's another option as well. And more options will undoubtedly crop up in the future. An iPad is a product that's only a few months old. You seem to think an iPad is something set in stone that will never have software updates....ever. Which of course will not be the case.

The iPad offers nothing you cannot do on a regular computer, period. People seem to ignore this extremely important fact.

Because it's not a fact. Go try playing a four player touch screen game on your regular computer where all four people have their hands on the large screen at the same time. I dare you.

It's not a wash, you want it to be a wash. Buyer's remorse. And you can disagree all you want, it doesn't change the facts.

LOL..wow. You sure seem to think you know a lot about other people whom you have never met. Too bad you don't know what you are talking about.

Also, funny you mention "app store development is where the action is right now". Should I mention Apple's increasingly draconian app restrictions, and how they're pushing away more and more developers each day? The more successful other platforms like Android become, the less developers will target the iOS platform. In fact, I will go as far to say that a vast majority of developers only develop for iOS currently because it's a large market. As that continues to change, you'll see more going to Android/etc.

Sorry. You can wring your hands all you want over this issue, but anyone that doesn't understand where developers are focusing most of their efforts just has their head stuck in the sand. That being said, there is room for everyone much as there are room for both Mac and PC developers and Xbox and Wii developers and I look forward to seeing more high quality stuff on the Android platform. But that day is not today. Much as the iPad itself, the Android platform is an immature one that is still having some teething pains. The great news is that undoubtedly both will get better as time goes on!

Because it won't be, which is why I said /true/ multitasking and gave an example.

"True" multitasking vs. the way Apple does it? From an end user standpoint, it makes no difference. Assuming the iOS app has been recompiled to take advantage of the 4.0 features...which at some point all will be unless they have been abandoned anyway. I don't like using abandoned apps where development and support has ceased. But perhaps you don't care about such things.

None of what you said is in disagreement with a fad. How many Beanie Babies sold way back when? How many teachers in schools, doctors in hospitals, and news anchors on air had them?

Seriously? You are going to compare people using a device in their actual daily WORK to owning a beanie baby which I assure you couldn't display a medical record at any point in time....omg. At least try and make valid comparisons.

Developers are increasingly discovering the iPad is not worth developing for.

Got any citations on that??? News stories? Or is that something you just dreamed up all on your own?

Which is why there's a large dearth in apps designed for it.

Gee...you don't think it might have to do with the fact that it's a NEW device do you??? And you don't think some developers might be waiting until 4.0 releases in a few months rather then redoing their work so soon?

It has a much higher cost for development, and people don't want to pay

High cost then what? The Android tablet that doesn't exist yet?

It runs on the same iOS limitations as the iPhone, but it's not a phone device. This infuriates people.

Riiiight. That's why people keep buying them. And why Apple sells them as fast as they make them. Because people hate them so much. Now you are just making crap up.

You're projecting. Also, you can see the results of this fad already. Sure, you saw them EVERYWHERE when they first came out. But now, only months after launch? Not so much. Even people who swore they couldn't live without it, have reverted to their laptops. People are beginning to realize there's no room for a third device in their life.

Ironic to say I am projecting when you have attempted to speak for 1) Developers 2)iPad users and 3) "people" and 4) myself. As for seeing them in the wild, I see them all the time. Passed by a small group of people and a guy using his last night while waiting for fireworks. He didn't look "infuriated".

You have a phone which runs almost everything the iPad does. You can't ditch the phone, you have to be able to make calls, and it's pocketable. You're not going to take your iPad to a bar or to dinner.

Bar no. Dinner, yes. But this is no different from a laptop. You don't lug your laptop to a bar do you? Yet you assign value to it even though it can't fit in your pocket and you don't take it to bars. So if you are going to ding an iPad for not wanting to take it to a bar, then you would have to do the same for your precious laptop.

So where does the iPad fit in?

It fits in that sweet spot in the middle. A time and place where a phone screen is too small (Airplanes, trains, etc.) to watch a movie or read a book comfortably. It's much lighter and mobile then a laptop so it's easy to carry from room to room and just plop down on a couch somewhere with it. It's great for the (ahem) reading room too. Would never take a laptop in there. It's also good for taking to meetings that you need to playback a video for someone or to collaborate over. You can even take some notes on it. And it's the only thing I know that you can play simultaneous four player touch screen games on. I can't watch movies and shows for hours on a PC. Too uncomfortable. But on a train, plane or someone's couch with an iPad? Oh hell yeah. And if I were a Doctor, I'd be using it to display patient X-rays on like I have seen on the news. There are also businesses using it as a Kiosk display. That ad of Apple's showing the piano player using it for reading music was pretty sweet too. So, lots of uses. The possibilities are as numerous as the number of people using it.

The iPad was created to solve a problem that didn't exist,

Like the iPod??? After all, you could have kept listening to CDs. Do you think an Android tablet also is being created to solve a problem that doesn't exist?

They'll regret their fad purchase, and the iPad will falter. Unfortunately, I don't have a time machine to show you this, but hey, if you want to come back in a year or two and call me out on being wrong, go right ahead.

Well, I really don't have to wait a year or two to call you wrong on this issue. But yeah...I'll do it a year from now and two years from now too. No problem. And sorry everyone for being so long winded. I know it's hard to read. There was just too many things said that just weren't true to not call them all out.

I'd venture to say most people bought the iPad just because it's something apple put out and advertised heavily. In fact, when they were asking people in line why they were buying it, this was the general consensus.

Still, the lack of standard peripherals is mind-bogglingly stupid. What happens if you want to xfer files where you don't have a data connection? So no, that is not a reliable viable solution.

Because it's not a fact. Go try playing a four player touch screen game on your regular computer where all four people have their hands on the large screen at the same time. I dare you.

Convertible netbook. You just lost that dare.

LOL..wow. You sure seem to think you know a lot about other people whom you have never met. Too bad you don't know what you are talking about.

I could say the same about you. Does that make you a hypocrite?

Obviously it does make a difference to end users. I'm an end user, and it makes a difference to me. Not to mention it doesn't multitask any app you want, only "Apple approved" apps can multitask. Yeah no thanks.

High cost then what? The Android tablet that doesn't exist yet?

I will point and laugh to someone who carries an iPad to dinner. I mean, really?

You mean the sweet spot Apple told everyone that magically existed? It's a novelty, and it may or may not pass. It seems these days people have a hard on for touch screens, and iPad may have it's uses, but it's still not all Apple makes it out to be. This is the thing that bothers people, and ignorant people eat it up and really believe it was made by pixie dust and unicorns.

Since almost every computer maker in the world is rushing out a tablet to challenge the iPad, you might want to let them know about the whole fad thing.

There's nothing magical about the tablet to me, so if you could make a laptop that weighed 1 1/2 pounds and had a great touch screen, and a better UI than Windows, then I would prefer that instead. I'm hoping HP actually comes up with something with WebOS - which is currently better than both Android and iOS.

Look again. I said Apple products in general are a fad, popularity-wise. The creative zen and Zune HD are both superior to the iPod, yet no runaway success.

Tablets have been around long before iPad, yet no runaway success.

This thread makes me LOL.

The OP tells people how he uses his iPad and people tell him...

"I don't understand why the iPad has any uses"
"Why carry an iPad when I can just use my netbook"
"I would laugh at you for carrying your iPad to all those places"

Seriously people, just let him know what an iPad/EVO can/cannot do and leave all of your opinions of why you hate/like an iPad/EVO at the door.

Ok we get it that you may not like an iPad, but let the OP choose for himself.

I'll be honest, I loved my launch day iPad 3G. Used it every day since I got it for business and fun. Got my EVO last Thursday (7/2). Haven't touched my Ipad once since. I still really like the iPad and all the features and benefits it brings, but, God I love my EVO. I can't put it down. The level of customization and performance is unmatched in the perfect form factor. I'm truly happy to have the best of both worlds.

Convertible netbook. You just lost that dare.

You need to go back and read the original post before you assume you have won anything. "The iPad offers nothing you cannot do on a regular computer, period". I guess your definition of "regular" is different then mine.

So what iPhone has more developers now. It was like that in the PC vs Mac wars, guess who won? Deja Vu allll over again.

Not sure what point you are trying to make here. You think Macs had more developers at one point? Or you think more developers develop for Windows which makes it more popular? (Which would make my point). What are you trying to say here?

Obviously it does make a difference to end users. I'm an end user, and it makes a difference to me. Not to mention it doesn't multitask any app you want, only "Apple approved" apps can multitask. Yeah no thanks.

You're not the typical end user. None of us here are. The average user goes out, buys their phone, downloads their apps and doesn't even know there are different ways of multitasking. They don't compare specs or lurk in technical forums, they just use their phone.

Obviously you don't pay attention to people, because there are many people who aren't buying the iPad (in this forum alone) Just for that reason.

That's not an answer to the original question. It was stated the iPad "infuriates" people. As if no one wants to buy one and everyone that has done so has taken it back in disgust. That couldn't be further from the truth. Is it going to appeal to everyone? No. Of course not. Why would it? No other product on the planet does. But to ignore the millions of people that are buying one, using one, and enjoying one is just stupid.

I will point and laugh to someone who carries an iPad to dinner. I mean, really?
I like to read while I am waiting for my meal if I am alone. If I am with someone, then we can play a game together while we wait. So laugh all you want. Meanwhile, I won't even notice that you are there. I'll just enjoy my dinner.

Now who's being the hypocrite? You imply that I don't know the future, but then you go on to pontificate about it being a fad as if you just stepped out of your DeLorean. But you also say it may or may not pass. So which is it? You seem to be stating both points of view at the same time.

Why can't other people just let others be happy with what they are using? Seriously? If it works for them, what skin is it off yours (or anyone else's) nose? I don't get it.

I don't know how I'd feel about an Android pad either... unless it dual booted Windows. IMO tablets should have a full scaled OS, not a stripped down phone OS.

The problem is, the existing popular full scale OS's are geared for mouse input while a mobile OS is designed from the ground up to work with touch. Perhaps someday those two worlds will meet, but as it stands now any attempts at that have been a pretty imperfect marriage.

Lol your not even worth arguing with. I need to stop wasting my time with people that can't grasp the obvious, and like the throw out semantics instead of carrying on an intelligible debate.

Well I feel like I should chime in seeing as I own and use the crap out of gadgets galore. I will not address user statements or argue but simply address where the iPad fits into my life. I travel non stop for work and the iPad allows me to do alot of downtime things like watch movies on a nice sized screen, read books, do crosswords, surf the internet (no not all sites because of flash but most the time it doesn't matter), use Log Me In to connect to my work PC's and Home PC and a few other things. Also makes security walkthroughs faster because I am not carrying my laptop on these trips as often. It does not, however replace a laptop. I have had netbooks and they bother me because they are laptops but not. The iPad has become my in between. it is my living room internet device of choice rather than bringing home my MacBook or Vaio every night. It is not for everyone and may infact be a fad but I believe once any of you get your hands on this form factor be it Windows or Android or Meebo or Linux or whatever other OS you can think of you wil realize it's usefulness. Even Bill Gates saw this as the future of home computing years ago, before Jobs I might add. These devices make a lot of sense for the Average comsumer in place of a 2nd home computer. Not just the iPad but all of the upcoming tablets. I am sure I will try out a Windows tablet when it comes out as well as an Android tablet because as I have stated I have an addiction lol But i could live without these devices. I could even live without my laptop/macbook. I could not live without my Evo

Why are the 2 even being compared? They are not even classified as the same device. This was a confusing thread.

To me they are pretty similar. The EVO as a phone is way down on the list of why I have it. Since I got it, my home laptops and netbook and GPS are all unused. I used one laptop for like 30 minutes total in the last month in two sessions.

If I could get an ipad and an iphone and swap the micro sim it would make it more attractive to me in 3G form. Personally, I am looking towards three froyo tablets (two 7 inch for the kids and a 10 for me). Most likely I would start with one and see how it goes, but for what I need, this and a nice desktop sounds like a nice solution.

This I can agree with. But I still believe the iPad is a poor implementation of what a tablet device can be, using current technology. (especially given the price)
