Learn to Use Your Genius Button & Dragon Dictation to It's Fullest

there are so many questions about how to get the most out of the genius button and dragon dictation, so i though i would post this link so people know where to go for answers to their questions.

Also a good tip for learning the genius app is to use the "surprise me" command when activating it. this will cause it to preform a random function and can be used to see what unknown actions the app can help you preform.

my g button dosent do all that. . . when i ask it to txt "john smith" im late, it just brings up the text screen for me to type. Help?

No problems for me! Works like a charm

you need to say "send message (or you can say send text) to John smith, I'm late"
messaging app opens txt fills in you hit send. You must use the full name of the person and they of course must be in your contact list.

Mine only works sometimes. I have to close it and try it again at least 50% of the time.

That really sucks! Don't know why there is any difference but I litterally have never had a problem with the txt part have had trouble finding addresses with it though.

The G button rarely works for me. Dragon Diction will work but for some reason when i press the G button and wait for it to load up, it never understands what I'm asking of it.

If there were a way to reprogram that G button to open up a search, I would do it.

Well in that case check out xda forums for a different rom. Most of Eugene_373's roms have the g button remapped to search but keep in mind the only way to remap keys or load a custom rom is to root your slide

What happens if you have two apps named the same thing? Can you force genius to recognize which app you want it to open?

I'd love to use the G Button, but whenever I long-press to open up, it makes me wait 20-30 seconds before telling me that it's listening.

other people have reported that too. i don't really have that problem. the phone does make me wait the first time i launch it after a fresh boot of the phone, but after that every other time i open it, it listens right away. the reason for this is it has to load all your contacts after booting your phone kinda like how your contacts will sync after each boot. it does this to make sure the contact list in the app is up to date.

Have any of you guys seen the new T-MO 3G Slide commercial where it shows some dude using the genius button to send his buddy a text AND include a picture in it all with one voice command?......I've tried this every which way possible but it doesn't seem to be something we can do.

I seen that last night and I think it was misleading. I don't think the pic part was actually being done with the voice command. They just made it seem that way. I'll play around some more myself today and see if it can work.

As for the other issues, I think sometimes it's just the person's voice. My hubby tends to talk to fast and he always had more problems with voice commands on his phones. He has to actually work at slowing down and ennunciating. What can I say?

Do you run a lot of applications or perhaps use a task killer app? I think the Genius button works fast only when it's been used recently and is still resident in memory. If you haven't used it in a while or have done a "background task kill" or have rebooted your phone, it will have to re-load and hence the delay.

No, I don't keep a lot of apps open. Just the basic stuff plus handcent, gmail unread counter, and maybe one or two other things.

I agree that the Genius button works faster when it's been used recently. I just opened it 5 times in a row and by the 5th time it was "listening" pretty much immediately. But to me that's pretty pointless. If I want to make a call or send a text I don't feel like I should have to wait 20+ seconds. And that's certainly now how it appears on the commercial

That's not the case for me. I find the first time I use it, it takes a few seconds to load contacts or whatever but after that, it comes up in just a few seconds. It must like my voice because I do pretty good with that. I think with these voice command apps, some voices just don't seem to register as well (tone & pitch??). My hubby always has more trouble with that stuff.

And when I'm out in public (at a store or something) I just think it would be weird to have people around me listen to what I'm telling my phone to do.

So, I guess do people use this mostly while driving or at home? I can't imagine too many people using it in other situations.

In my case, I have and office pretty much secluded from civilization so I can use my G more. I'm making a conscious effort to do that and get used to it because I like to utilize all the features of any device I have (get my money's worth you know). When I think of it, I use it to open up apps and on occasion to do text messages or even dial someone. On the few occasions I actually need to search for something, I do use it for that also. I would say my success rate with voice commands is pretty good - at least 90%

they should make a commercial about a guy standing in a T-Mobile line to pay his bill and he receives a text message from his friend and instead of him typing back he uses his genious button to reply.

The dialog would be something like :

"Send text to Blue Ball, I am standing in this slow line trying to check out this girls butt without her knowing that I'm looking. I will call you back so you can come over for the sleep over. Ok later dude"

Of course the man would be in his 20's.
