First Apps for your phone

Yeah, I wish there were some kind of "Beginner's Guide to Android" somewhere, for us Android Newbies to learn the basics and get up to speed on the essential apps. That would be nice.
Agreed. I wish there was a good rundown of all the good apps and things android can do. Even simple things like taking pictures of the screen, alll the latitude stuff

@kishin you should check out Appbrain. There's plenty of apps free & paid for you to check out and reserve in Appbrain for you to DL on to your X when you get it.

Yep, this for sure. If you don't have your phone already, you can make lists of apps you definitely want on your phone, ones you want to try, etc. You do this on your computer and then install the AppBrain app and it syncs up. Great really.

My apps:
Google Voice
Multiple browsers: Dolphin Browser HD (with add ons that allow bookmark sync), xscope lite (tho don't use as much now with DHD above), Opera mini, Skyfire
ICE: awesome, awesome app if you have ANY med issues... don't miss it.
ATK
Astro File Manager
Multiple book readers (waiting for Google Editions to be released, still haven't decided on my current fav but not committing to any DRM formats yet): Aldiko, FBReader, Ireader, Wordplayer (this one's supposed to sync with Calibre on your computer but I've never had any luck with it), Kindle, Borders, Kobo (current favs, Aldiko for epub, ireader for others)
AppBrain
Atrackdog
Barcode scanner
Blogaway
Contacts Cleanup
Craigsnotification
CSipSimple,
Directv
DocScanner: this got a bad rap initially because it had a force close bug in its first release but it's awesome and the only "scanner" that actually lets you crop and make decent looking documents you aren't ashamed to send. Plus you can upload the docs directly to your Google docs account. Definitely try it out. (no I have nothing to do with the app, it's just the only one I found with that functionality)
Google Earth
facebook
fancy widget (but will likely move over to beautiful widgets)
fast web installer (which works with AppBrain and gives additional functionality)
Gdocs
Geodelic
geoquiz
Gmote (awesome and simple to set up! great for travel)
Google Goggles
Graffiti
Gtasks (pro)
Home switcher
Jorte
Kaloer Clock/One Nightstand (tho I prefer Kaloer...will prob use Moto dock app tho)
Key Ring
Jewels
Sound machine app: lightning but, white noise lite, etc
memory
memory trainer
Layar (though haven't really used it much yet)
My tracks
NewsRob lite
Number Fixer
Open Spot
Pandora
PDA Net
Picasa Tools
Places Directory
Pure Calendar (agenda)
Pure Music Widget
Shop Savvy
Speed Anatomy (addicting...warned you)
Speedview
System
Tasker
Where's My Droid (tho still can't get it to work...haven't had a chance to find replacement)
Wifi Analyzer
Wifi Browser Login
Windfinder (I like flying kites)
Multiple weather apps...still deciding which one I like best: Palmary weather, iMap Weather, weatherbug, weather channel
Multiple Keyboards/input: Shapewriter (not currently in the market, similar to swype but you can still find the apk online & download), SlideIT (not my fav...prob won't reinstall on DX), Smart keyboard, swiftkey, swype, graffiti, drivers for BT keyboard which I hope will work with the X...no go on the DInc)
Also trying out various media apps such as doubletwist but haven't settled on one just yet. Still use my zune a lot for music so not a huge priority at this point.
Will be installing google voice dialer in addition when I get the new phone to manage outgoing calls. Seems worth the $2.

BTW purchased apps stay w/ your Google account so once you purchase them and sign in on a new phone, it's simple to reinstall even though they were paid apps...at least that's what I was told and how it worked when I went from my 1st defective DInc to my 2nd (which turned out defective as well...lol)

EDIT: OOPS! Forgot Launcher Pro and ADW!!

So I've got a good start on all of these Apps and installed Beautiful Widgets, awesome!!

So any suggestions for good E-mail widgets / RSS widgets? With Launcher Pro and Beautiful widgets I want something that "goes" you know? Is there an equivalent to beautiful widgets but for messaging and RSS?

Check out Pure Messenger Widget for messaging. I've liked the dev's other widgets, he does great work. NewsRob does RSS synced to your Google reader but there are others. AppBrain is a great resource to check them out, compare, check similar ones, search, view reviews and then save the ones you want to install. :) NewsRob has two versions, a free ad supported one and a paid pro version which drops ads and adds additional features. But Feedr News Reader looks really promising and is much cheaper than the pro version of newsrob. Just try them out and see what you like. Remember, for a paid app, you pay and download and try it for 24 hours. If you don't like it, uninstall for a full refund. If you download it again and pay again later, the sale is then final. So don't be afraid to try paid apps, just remember your 24 hour time frame. :)

Beautiful Widgets - Android app on AppBrain

Check out the link there, it has a few screenshots and some info. It's 1.49euro which they say on that page is $1.92. All paid apps go through Google Checkout so whatever payment you have setup through there.

Got my Droid X on my way out of San Antonio on Thursday. I'm now in Enid, OK, i.e., northwest Oklahoma! Verizon definitely is not working in this city of about 40,000 people. I'm on "extended network". No 3G, 1X, or anything! I can barely makes phone calls

I'll be here a week so I won't be installing any of these great Android apps on my new Droid X! Keep the lists going and I'll catch up when i'm back home!

Oh, yeah, i'm on my Apple IPad using the AT&T 3G! So much for Verizon's stellar coverage! It definitely sucks where I'm at.
