Unable to download apps

Hi,

Firstly I am VERY new to this, just got my HTC Desire today!!
Frustration though.... Trying to download apps via the android market. Selected the app, and it tells me it will be downloaded.
I go to the download section and the app says starting downloading and just stays at that. I have cancelled and started again but no joy.
Connected via Wireless connection and also tried mobile internet

Help PLEASE....

Did you use to have a google mail account before it became gmail? If so and you or the phone settings have changed your google account from google mail to gmail change it back, this is resolving the issue for some people:

HTC DESIRE stuck @ starting download - Android Market Help

Other suggestions are powering off, removing the battery and sim, replacing them and powering on again.

I'll keep hunting but let me know if these help.

wait before you do a reset, have you tried transferring to other wifi acces spoints or switch to another type of internet connection- remember that Android Market downloads wont work behind restrictive firewalls as it uses a specific port for downloading apps...

this will cause problems like what you have specially if you are behind a restrictive corporate firewall, aka, using the office's wifi :)

1. go to your settings,

2.then select "manage applications" ,

scroll down to,

3. "Checkin Service" then select "clear data"
4. ."Download Manager" then select "clear data"
5. ."Google Apps" then "clear data"
6. "Google Talk Service" then select "clear data"
7. " Market" then select "clear cache"

Thought this one would work, did it all but no difference.

what he said above worked for me previously. so that should do it
If it still doesnt work then a factory reset might be necessary

Not something I really want to do unless I have to.
Its a brand new phone too so, dont get why that would make the difference. Sorry if that sounds off, dont mean it to. Maybe you could explain what that would do.
Thanks...

Hi, Thought that might be an issue so used the mobile internet rather than my wifi, but still no joy.

Putting a new card in shouldn't affect this - if all files were copied over everything should be fine. Did this myself and I'd imagine a good many others will have too.

My only problems like this (apart from the odd blip) were when I tried to change my email to gmail from googlemail. The market didn't work for a day - something to do with its link to Google Talk. Maybe check if all is working with Talk? Does it login okay to that?

check your internal memory
in my case if my internal memory (where the apps are installed) gets to/or lower then 14MB it won't let me install anything, even if the app is less then 1M. if I have 14MB or less and try to download and install it will say starting download but it won't, and then I go to manage apps and as soon as I uninstall something the download starts ASAP.
try to have more then 14MB internal before you install something new

...hope the 2.2 update comes really soon to install everything on SDcard

Thanks for your suggestions GrenW, ShogunAssassin7 and xlucian.
I GOT IT WORKING....... Woo Hoo ! LOL
All I did was go into my Googlemail account.
Change it to a gmail account (obviously the thing we are not to do).
Then changed it back to a Googlemail account.
I was then messing about with the handset later and telling a friend about the problem I was having downloading the apps, clicked on the download button, and it WORKED !

So if you have a Googlemail account, change it to a gmail account and then back again.

Thanks to all again.
