touchscreen and browsing

This is my first touchscreen phone and I am having trouble getting use to it and was wondering if there were any tricks to it.

While scrolling a page with my finger I often find I am inadvertently clicking a link I didn't intend or two links are close together and my finger makes contact with the wrong one first and in both cases I have to stop loading the page I dont want, hit menu and back to reload the page I did want and start scrolling over again.

I also find it unnatural that the phone can scroll in both the x and y directions at the same time. It makes sense to scroll in whatever direction is more predominant.

I think these are things you just have to get used to if you've never browsed on a touch screen before. When I first used an iPhone, I was not at all impressed with the browsing for the same reasons. I thought the touch idea was horrible, but after using it for a while (and now the Droid), I've become so used to it that I can pretty accurately click even tiny links, and position web pages the way I like them (Oh, and no - I don't need pinch zoom, thanks) without much effort.

Hopefully you will become accustomed to it and you'll begin to enjoy the browsing experience more.

As long as you move your finger before letting go, the screen will scroll instead of clicking something. Also, if the screen is scrolling due to momentum (flicking), you can tap the screen to stop it, and it won't click anything.

If you see two links very close together, zoom in as close as possible before clicking the link. Also, click a little above the link you want. This was the case on the iPhone (a 5 pixel off-set, I believe) and seems to me to be on the Droid.

Thanks for the feedback guys, it helps keep things in perspective. I love the ability to download apps and advancement of the hardware but so far seems like doing simple things like email or browsing has become more complicated (coming from a sidekick).

What is the mechanic for getting the zoom +/- to appear?

As far as accidently clicking on a link i have done that also, great use of the d-pad for precise movement

What is the mechanic for getting the zoom +/- to appear?

Just double tap a screen to get it to zoom, then drag the screen in any direction and the +/- will appear
