Root Kernal Problems? I haven't a clue?

Hi again everyone! I knew I'd be back asking some questions once again. The other day I rooted my phone (ofcourse with lots of USB problems) however I got my phone rooted and just used the Stock kernal I guess. Everything ran perfect!

Two days ago, I became brave and decided to add Joey's 2.04 kernal from the kitchen. I did my update zip and added it to my card, etc... I rebooted and everything was fine. My battery seemed better and I didn't have any problems. (I am also using a theme .. and no other custom stuff)

Last night, I was browsing using Dolphin browser and the next thing I get a data lockup and decided ok this is nothing abnormal... we all get the data lockups, right? I just haven't had one since I rooted a week ago! So I reboot my phone and call it a night.

Today, I've had nothing but issues with my phone. Data lockup and NO 3G. I mean 90% of the time I am in stuck in 1X no matter what I do. I even had my random reboot. As I type this my phone is sitting next to me 1X. What the heck is going on? I even updated PRL. No help!

My question is... do you think it's the kernal? Should I go over to the kitchen and try another kernal (by itself - only file in zip) and try it? Should I reflash this kernal again?

AHHHHHHH I am so over this phone.

Thank you! Sorry for the long post!~

Hi DNT! Here to save the day!

Can I ask you a couple more questions? I might sound like a complete idiot.

If I Install one with Tether... I have never used tether on any phone ever. Can I get charged by using this by Sprint. How does sprint know I am not using it or am.. What is VPN? Sorry...

Also, Which recovery is better? Are they the same. I am using Joey's recovery 2.13

What about Open GL?

______

I am going to do another update.zip and place on card. If I choose meatcurtains v.2 can I just add this and nothing else .. and I mean that would be the only thing in the zip. I am currently using a theme from the kitchen Khanning - Classic_noir .. I like the black notification bar.

Sorry for all the questions.

Hi there... I'll try :)

There is no way for them to know you are tethering, and even if they did you are paying for the data package (required for smartphones). Although you are passing the data to another device it still goes through the phone just as if you were browsing with the phone itself.

VPN stands for virtual private networking and in basic terms allows you to create a secure tunnel across the internet from one device to another (like your phone to you pc) to allow data transfer across the internet. More often used for secure business networks to be access abroad but could come in handy if for instance your in school and forgot to grab a paper you need that day you could download it to your phone via VPN from your pc at (assuming its connected to internet).

Personally i've never used joey's recovery, i use 3.1.1 and have no complaints with it. Best advice i can give is load it up and see if you like it, you can always go back ;).

As far as OpenGL (the video drivers for the moment) the samdroidv4.4 is by far the best package for the moment. Unless you playing games with rendered 3d graphics you wont notice it however.

Yes you can just select a kernel from the kitchen and that will create an update.zip with just that in it. Boot to recovery and install.

OK thanks DNT!

So I am over at the kitchen... I want to create a new update.zip from the kitchen.

If I add meatcurtains V.2, Recovery 3.11, Samdroid 4.4 Turbo, and thats all I would need ... create zip and add to card?

Would I need LouieZiffer Wifi Tether v1.2 (extra option below the rest)

I am using a theme. Will my theme stay intact or should I use the Deodex Theme (stock them) then go back and create theme only to place on card after doing the above?

Also, is it true that I need to clear Dalvik Cache when doing this stuff ... like adding roms, kernals?

Thank you so much for your fast replies!!!!

You got it, as far as wifi tether v1.2 you might as well let the update.zip install it, you can get it from the market too.

Sometimes themes can cause issues but in this case you should be ok with leaving it.
Clearing the dalvik cahce is never a bad idea but it just keep in mind you phone will take a lot longer to boot after clearing it.

Your welcome :)

One more quick question since you obviously know about this stuff and I am slowly learning yet still a little confused on how this all works...

Say later on I want to steer away from the kitchen and add Radioactive Froyo or another one... What is involved in that. Would I do the same thing or do I have to start from scratch and use the sprint updater etc...

Please bear with me as it's hard to comprehend stuff unless I do it. That is the way I learn the ins and outs. The problem is I am always scared of screwing up my phone and being SOL.

Ok I am going to update.zip now from kitchen. My phone is still in 1X mode so we will see what happens with new update.

Thanks.

Ok I'll just stick to kitchen until I really get a grasp of all of this. Hopefully, I can get input from other members and knowledge from SDK to know what I am doing. LOL by this point I will have moved on from this phone.

I did forget one more question. When I go to Settings/Applications/Manage Applications there are a few apps that I got rid of that are still there that say 0.00 .. is it safe to delete those? For instance, Kickback, Talkback, Soundback,Sprint TV, etc.. They all say 0.00 and aren't installed (ofcourse backed up in sdcard/sdx/backup/app

OMG 1X will not stop! Even with new Meatcurtains V.2 ... WTHECK. I have no clue what is going on.?!!! I hate to redo this all over again like Start from fresh because of all my USB errors.

Update to PRL doesn't even make it better.

Clueless as to why I am having this problem?!

Also, I have never had this problem prior. So I know that I am in a good area, etc..

Yes, its ok to uninstall those. They are the left over 'packages' from the .apk's you removed. As far as the reception goes its hard to say. Did you drop the phone or anything like that? There have been know issues where the antenna wire comes undone on these phones. Other than taking it apart to check the connections you are limited to flashing back to stock and see if that fixes the problem. If it does then you know it was something you installed, if not then its a hardware probelm and you might as well take it to sprint and have it replaced.

OMG really... I am now rooted with no custom kernal or anything else.. Not yet ofcourse... However, 1X PROBLEM will not go away.... WTHECK! I guess my hubby came home and he was having trouble with 1x and turned on wifi to eliminate problem.. COULD this be SPRINT service problem in our area?

i first noticed this too when i went from 2.1 to 1.5 (fully stock). try the littlejth kernal, it was always really stable for me. and also, if you haven't already done so, try going to settings>wirless &networks>mobile networks > system select >home only

I've never had 1.5 on this phone. When I root I use the Patcher to Patch the Sprint Updater. However, I called sprint technical store. I know some people that work there. Yes, they are aware of my rooting endeavors. =) They said it could be a backlog of provisioning... and for me to give it until tomorrow and come by. It's not only me but my Husband's Hero (not rooted) is having issues since he got home from work. It's definetly a sprint problem. I will select "home" and see if that works. Thank you!

As far a kernel.. I haven't picked one yet. I might try radioactive froyo BUT I am hearing of GPS issues with it? So I might stay with the kitchen and play around again until I really know what I am doing. Oh and NO USB issues this time when redoing phone! =)
