1) What is clockworkmod recovery?
Clockworkmod recovery is basically a feature added to rooted phones that allows the flashing, backing-up, and restoring of ROMs.

2) Why do I need clockworkmod recovery?
If you're a person who looks to flash ROMs to their Android phone, you'll need this for several reasons. I agree it is the most important. I just hope people can see that soon. ROMs are gonna be coming it pretty quick soon, they're definitely gonna need it lol.

As far as installing it, you can download ROM Manager from the market and have the phone do it, or you can manually flash this to your phone by renaming it to "update.zip". Using ROM Manager is easier.....it's free in the market.

I'm not exactly sure if you can flash it back to factory, I've never had to. As far as the benefits, it makes switching ROMs so much easier. You can also back up the current ROM you have installed on your phone, in case of a situation like you not liking the ROM you just installed, or the ROM you just installed causes bootloops and what not. Being able to do Nandroid back ups and so on. Trust me, it's saved my phone PLENTY of times. There's much more detail to it, which I'll add to the OP so those new to the Android game can understand.

My opinion, it's not something that's recommended when flashing ROMs, it's something required.

Other ROMs have different features. One thing Google does is, they allow developers to make them better. Developers(Us) can build ROMs that'll add features to Android. ROMs even allow us to get Android builds early. I've had Android 2.2 on my Droid since June, but the official release hasn't been released yet. ROMs can even add features like theming the phone, controlling what different animations do, controlling how the phone boots ex:boot animations, and so much much more.

ROMs can be built from "source code", which is something Google releases for developers. Being built from source means more customization, and adding of features, and even taking away unnecessary features.

Some ROMs are modified from builds that have been released by Google or Motorola as well. Generally these ROMs are leaked, and developers take them and modify them. They aren't as customizable as ROMs built from source code, but they are far less complicating and generally come with less problems.

Google basically allows everyone to personalize their phones to their liking.

Exactly. That's why I love Android so much. There's always going to be leaks of different ROMs and Google always releases the "source code" before they release any official updates. So people are able to build ROMs before the official gets released.

Mark my words, before Android 2.2 officially hit any version of the Samsung Galaxy S, Android 2.2 will already be running on them.

I am another New to Android. Samsung Captivate 2.2 Froyo (Odin One Click)Trying to Backup with Rom Manager before playing with roms. I am rooted and have titanium backup running fine but when i try to use Rom Manager, fix permissions i get the message: An errir occurred while attempting to run privileged commands. I checked in Super User and I see that Rom Manager is in there? Also when I do try to do a backup of the existing rom it brings up the blue option screen with the usual options to reinstall packages etc. reboot is highlighted so that is what i do. I have not reinstalled packages at all as i am not sure if i should or not. There is a yellow text section underneath that reads

I do not see a backup anywhere by the name it says it will create?

Any help would be appreciated.........
