Phone goes straight to voicemail & unsure what's using data at the time

Hi,

There have been numerous times when people have tried to phone me and it's gone straight to voicemail. I know when using GPRS you can't use voice and data at the same time but I can't figure out what's using the data stream. I only have the weather app which updates every 3 hours but even when it's not due an update this issue has occurred.

Can anyone suggest how to figure out what's using data?

The only fix I can think of is to turn off Internet while in a GPRS area assuming the problem is a clash of data / voice.

Thanks

I have similar. I have my gmail app pushing - and I don't want to turn it off just in case someone might call me somewhere where I haven't noticed I haven't the right reception. Is a pain. :(

Have either of you disabled "Enable always on mobile data"?

Manu> Settings> Wireless and networks>Mobile Networks

Also, do you see the up and down arrow under the G become active a lot? Do you ever see the rotary "sync" icon to the left of the G?

Sometimes your phone will poll the data network to check it is there. This may well use "data". When the G turns to E or H for example, the phone must Poll the data network to see what is available.

But I don't want to disable data! I want my email coming through whenever it's sent - I use it almost as a free instant messager.

It's a bit rubbish to have an awesome phone if you have to turn off all the features to make it useable as a phone. *stomps feet stroppily*

So - if I turn off always on mobile data - will I get emails only when I ask it to sync? Ditto weather?

If you turn off "enable always on mobile data", everything still syncs as normal, but for the gaps in between syncs, the data goes to sleep. I don't know how this will work with GPRS to be honest, but its worth a shot. I use this option.

GPRS can support simultaneous data and voice connections using a technology called DTM (dual transfer mode). The problem is that both your phone and your network need to support it. I can't find any info but it would be insane for the Desire to not support it so I'm assuming it does. Good news for Vodaphone customers is that their network does support it, I can't find if O2 (which I'm on) does - I guess I'll have to wait until I get a voicemail when I know I've been using the data... From what I gather from a web trawl T-Mobile doesn't support DTM but that may have changed. I have no idea about 3.

Can anyone on Vodaphone do the test ? I can try on O2 at some point (just not at work as I appear to be in a Faraday cage...)
