Incredible change to LCD poses problems for all of us

SLCD has 40% less draw than current LCD? That's new to me! No really, that's new info to me! Got some links for this?

My current inc screen is very viewable in direct sunlight. Dunno what the problem is out there?

I just pulled those numbers out of thin air. Just making the point that AMOLED's increased efficiency will offset LCD's greater visibility outdoors.

Oh, and I found a couple of sources confirming the 40% number. Organic LED - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
AMOLED/OLED vs TFT LCD | TechGoo

But you really can't compare 2 screen technologies that precisely. Alot of it has to do with HOW you use the device (AMOLED takes alot more power to generate whites than dark colours). It also depends on how it's implemented...how bright is the brightest setting? Exactly how does the phone handle auto brightness? etc.

I've had a lot of trouble using my phone outside, before I decided to just leave it at max. For me it was almost impossible to see in full sun with sunglasses and anything below 75%.

EDIT: I just reread what you wrote...and I was comparing AMOLED to LCD (generic TFT, any specific technology might be different). I'll reread my original post and edit it if necessary. Yeah...I'm not going to even guess how SLCD battery drain will compare with standard TFT. I don't even know for sure that SLCD is IPS or PVA.

No promises, but I'll try and do some googling about that sometime (honestly, a touch hungover right now and don't really feel like wading through engineering journals right now :) )

Is The iPhone 4's LCD the Best? | PCMag.com

This does a pretty good job of comparing the two. I would prefer the SLCD screen right now. Any way of telling which is which?
And the iPhone uses the SLCD, so wouldn't the screens be pretty much the same if they switched from AMOLED?

The iPhone's screen has a higher resolution. That would still be an obstacle to overcome in comparisons.

Does anyone think that Apple, which uses Samsung panels for the iPhone 4 and is in a patent suit with HTC, may have strong armed Samsung into "artificially constraining" supplies so that HTC would have to switch to use a different tech?

I doubt that because while Apple is in a suit against HTC any kind of "questionable" activity would probably cost Apple the suit.

Well, SLCD will have two advantages over the current AMOLED:

1) None of that Pentile Matrix rendering issue
2) Bit-depth. Unless HTC cheaps out and gives out another 16-bit LCD display.
Even the original Motorola Droid is 24 bit.

I really hate this "SLCD" crap. We've been using IPS and *VA panels for a decade now, people need to call them what they are.

There's nothing Super about them, any LCD TV over 24" or so has used them pretty much forever.

I thought the iPhone 4's IPS screen was an LG product? Could be wrong, having problems trying to find where I saw that.

you're correct, the iPhone's screens are manufactured by LG-

but then we can't let stupid things like facts stand in the way of a good conspiracy theory.

anyway, hi, this is my first post... ordered DInc 6/16, still awaiting ship notice, and obviously very interested in the screen tech switch thang...
my two cents is that with the increased battery usage of SLCD over the AMOLED, HTC should also include their larger battery in the, um, updated design.

I love the Incredible BUT I have found the screen washout in bright sunlight to be increasingly frustrating. If you wear polarized sunglasses, the problem is worse. The biggest difficulty is trying to respond to an SMS text message. The onscreen keyboard is very difficult to see whether I'm using the HTC, Better or Smart Pro keyboards. My prior phone was an LG Chocolate 3 and it had brilliant TFT LCD screens that could be easily seen in any kind of light. If an LCD screen shows up better in sunlight but draws more power than the AMOLED screen it might be a reasonable compromise especially with 2150 and 3500 amp batteries now available. Again, love the phone, just not happy with outdoor visibility.

I was refering to SLCD over AMOLED.

We all know that amoled is up to 40% more efficient over tft lcd's

Which screen do you have?

I have the amoled, and it's fine for me, even with polarized sun glasses. Yes, I'll admit it's a bit washed out, but I can still read everything.

I love the AMOLD, without a screen protector on it looks STUNNING next to my friends moto droid.

If they do switch to SLCD, I will demand an equal or better phone (SLCD is not exactly the same so it is up for debate, so it is not equal, and can not be proved to be 100% better without opinion taken into account). Assurion has it written in the contract where a replacement phone has to be the same and if that is not available, then equal or better. Since the DINC was top of line when I bought, they will have to replace it with a modern top of the line phone (I have played a very similar card with VZW for my friend and he walked out with a new phone).

/me cross my fingers that the DINC dies in like a year and half (same amount of time my Iphone lasted) and by then we should have 2ghz dual core phones at least running IPS screens.

Don't get me wrong, I love this phone, but after a while it will die, no denying that.

Um, all of my past phones work to this day...

Same here. I don't see what the fuss is about.

Seriously, I was concerned about the Inc's sunlight-viewing capabilities after everything I'd read on the interwebs, but I just crank it up to full brightness and I've not had any issues. It doesn't seem to be any worse or better than the old LCD panel on my 2G iPhone. I dunno, maybe I'm just holding it wrong. ;)

I think I have more of an issue with how mirror-like most phone screens are -- and that seems universal from device to device. Keep catching sight of my ugly mug when I'm trying to use the screen.

the iphone addressed that pretty well with their matt finish screen covers. i cut one down to size for use on my eris.

i think they are called anti-glare screens. its just a screen protector with a matte finish.

Well that's where I've said over and over and over again in the past.

I have a Clear Protector brand screen protector on mine.

Based on what I replied to, we don't know what screen he has (if there's even a screen change), and if he has a protector on.

bottom line: AMOLED is the better screen especially for the Incredible. #1 issue with the Incredible is battery life. AMOLED is more energy efficient than LCD, since it requires the extra backlight, which in turn, will make the battery life even worse. I'm glad i got mine when it did, and after seeing my AMOLED screen next to an LCD screen, i don't think i'll go back to LCD, unless i have to. The colors are much more rich, and those blacks are so deep, it's insane.

EDIT: Plus i remember hearing somewhere, about a month ago, that they will make AMOLED and the LCD options for the Incredible.

I think another thing to consider is that the Droid X, upcoming Droid 2, and Samsung Fascinate (as well as any other high end Android phone) will likely cannibalize Droid Incredible sales, meaning, they may have no problem meeting demand with the AMOLED screens, without having to go to SLCD. Just something to think about.

Just got my Inc today. Took it outside to check out camera and i could see the screen very well in direct sunlight. Pictures are beautiful. I have no idea what screen I have. Love it anyhow

I would say you got the LCD screen. When I take my Incredible with the AMOLED screen, I cannot see anything on it. To see anything I have to cover it with my hand or take it into the shade.
