Help Single Picture Messages Suck. (Slideshow? What the hell.)

So this crap is annoying.

Every damn picture I get, I have to make sure to look at it fast before 2 seconds end and the damn picture disappears, because for some reason, HTC decided slideshow view for all their damn picture messages was a good idea.

Pressing the pause button doesn't work at all, as it just turns the screen black for whatever freakin reason.

Anyone know how to fix this?

No, he means MMS (look at thread title). Handcent is they way to go if you don't like the default messages app.

I don't want to use handcent though. I tried it, and it drains my battery so fast. It sucks compared to the built in app.

But whatever, It's just annoying. I wish there was some setting or something in there to change it.

It happens when you send someone a picture message and add a message to the picture. If you send the picture and add no text, it won't get turned into a slide show. I send the picture alone first, then send a text behind it if i want to describe what it is to eliminate the problem with it getting turned into a slide show.

Handcent isn't the sort of app that should cause abnormal battery drain. And once your text threads become several hundred messages long, you'll begin to find the stock messaging app less and less useful and you'll be forced to use something like Handcent or Chomp. I'm approaching 4500 texts on one of my threads, and the stock messaging app literally takes over a minute to open it. Unusable for me.

Handcent did this to me too with an MMS. My friend sent me a picture and it showed up as a slideshow, so I was like ok, I tried to view the slideshow and I just got a black screen. Same in both Hancent and the stock app. I ended up having to save the file to the SD card and using a file browser to open it. Nightmare. That was my first MMS so i don't know what to expect next time i receive one.

Edit: just tried sending myself one - worked fine. Maybe it was a fluke or just that particular picture. Who knows.

Yeah, I've received about 40 or so MMSes, all from the same iPhone user, and all of them while using handcent. I think only one or maybe two of them decided to show up as slideshows. Flukes I guess. In any case, I just did what you did and saved them to the SD card. But unless something is quite wrong, you shouldn't have to do that often.

I don't know about stock message app, but Handsent has the OPTION to "View MMS as default slideshow mode" So if you don't like it, you can change it.

I second the fact that Handcent doesnt seem to drain my battery. Also, you can customize it to be more classic or more fun with the font oacks (also free).

Contact HTC support and complain. ...though they're not going to do anything about it. I got 3 different stories as to why the Droid Eris started working this way only AFTER its latest maintenance update, but all of the answers revolved around the "blame Google" game.

They're not going to acknowledge a bug until more users with the problem let them know that it is, in fact, a problem. Just go to HTC's website and either call the support number, or e-mail in a support ticket.

Well, what I did was go and download a third party app, handcent, and that works perfectly, if not better, than the stock app.

My Droid 2 has the same problem. I did some tests, it seems that a picture can be converted to a slideshow if there is text in the message area. Having a subject line does not affect it. This was the case when the image was sent from e-mail. When I txt myself from a mms phone, having text in the message area does cause the slideshow conversion.

Additionally, if there is no text in the message area, but it was sent from e-mail or a message app set to HTML or Rich Text format, the picture will be converted to a slideshow. Probably due to unseen code in the message area.

To Joe_Evaristo, Sorry am late to this party. I too have an Eris. Got it Feb. 2010. About 6 months or so after I got it, mine too started doing this thing when I received a text message with an attached pic. It used to be, I could open the attached pic, and view forever. I mean, no slideshow at all. Then all of a sudden, this annoying slideshow thing showed up. Says its 5 seconds, but seems more like two. So now, i have to tap the pic to bring up the menu, and save it to my SD card. And, the "Pause" sucks too, as it turns my screen black, so, if it's a pic I care to view, at all, I must first save to SD. Other thing about Eris/Droid MMS, is, how the heck do I clean out stale messages that have been deleted, but are still ghosted somewhere in the phones storage? Have this problem with on-board storage always running low, so am constantly deleting emails, then using Ghost Commander (Root) to browse to com.android.mail and delete already deleted emails that just seem to hang around. Thinking MMS/SMS does this same thing, but cannot find the right path in Ghost Commander.

Thanks all in advance.
