Try this (top post #151) on an XP box. This worked on my XP laptop when I first got adb working.

Re-reading your post, I'm confused. What do you mean by "fresh 2.1?" Stock 2.1? If so, how did you get there? Have you always been there? Or did you already downgrade from 2.2 using the root procedure? If so, there's no way to get to where you are unless you already have working USB drivers. You need the drivers to use adb. And if you downgraded, you've already used adb quite a bit.

So I'll assume you have always been on 2.1 and want to root 2.1. My link to the unrevoked modified USB driver will do the trick. make sure to follow the instructions in that post. And note that you will have to install the driver several times depending on what state your phone is in. This is normal.

Extract the driver zip to your C: drive. The zip contains a folder called Android USB Driver. So when you've extracted it, the drivers will be in C:\Android USB Driver. Go there first in windows to verify you see the driver files, in particular: android_winusb.inf. That's what windows will need to see to recognize the driver.

That should do it....

No, I was following the video. I am on Part 2. I did all the adb stuff and pushed all the files to the phone and it went from 2.2 to 2.1 after it rebooted. The next steps were reboot to bootloader, then select hboot. then hboot usb. At that point the video directed me to download the modified usb drivers. This is where I am stumped cause I can not manage to find a set that works. I scanned through the rest of the video and it appears I am done with all the adb stuff. Looks like it's all phone interaction from here....after I get this driver installed. When I hit my device manager there is a "other device" which is Android 1.0, so I assume I need to update that driver for me to move on.

When I did the steps in post 151, you posted.....once I plug the phone in, my XP box finds new hardware and wants a driver installed.

Thoughts?

Sounds like the video you're referring to is the original toast method for rooting.

When windows is asking to install drivers, that's when you follow the instructions in my previous post. I assume you already extracted the .zip file that you downloaded? Point windows to the directory where the .INF file is.

I got it. I had to download the zip from the public site on my EVO. Then I extracted it on the phone. then I moved the file to my PC. I went thru the unrevoked stuff and it completed. Now I am pulling down the Amon_RA recovery. That's the one he's using in the vid, so I have no idea which is better.

It's more about preference than which is actually better. I for example am a fan of the Amon_RA recovery over Clockwork.
