WiFi hot spot on 2.2?

Hey guys, if I read this correctly, with 2.2 Android OS we have capability to turn our phones into WiFi hotspot, but it come at cost from Verizon. I already pay $45 for corporate unlimited data usage, paying anything extra on top of that for the times when I use my phone as hot spot just seems ridicules.
Isn't there any apps or ways to avoid the extra gridy charge from Verizon for the WiFi hotspot usage?

Yes, I am rooted, running a custom ROM that allows wifi-tethering and using the free "wifi tether" App from the market. When activated it appears just like a 54 mbps router in my list of available networks *except* it is shown as an ad hoc network which some devices cannot connect to.

Rooting the Android system is fairly easy (at least on the Motorola Droid) and particularly easy if you have Android 2.1 or 2.2 FRG01B.... the newest build FRG22D that some people are getting from Verizon right now makes rooting a bit more difficult but still quite do-able.

Cheers
