T-Mobile US & "Required" data packages

I'm surprised this has yet to be covered when I see a lot of individual threads about required data packages. The following will only work if you are on T-Mobile US, with a grandfathered rate plan(no EM/EM+).

For those of you who can get by on wifi alone and would rather not have a fairly expensive data plan to deal with every month, you CAN remove it with no contract penalty if you have the required unlimited text package added to your account that is 15/mo. It's one of those less talked about features that T-Mobile still offers to their grandfathered customers. When you make the switch, they will say it's required to have data but don't buy it. The proper text package is there, and you can switch to it. In their system it will look something like: "REQ UNL MSG". Feel free to write that down and give it to the rep helping you.

This will work on any smartphone, not just Android.

What if you have unlimited text, but you don't pay 15/mo, you pay less than that? I have unlimited text for families, it is a very old grandfathered plan, and it costs below 15/mo.

Can you let me know please, because I would like to drop my T-mobile data and purchase the new Virgin Hotspot card and unlimited 3G instead.

What if you are in a 2 yr contract, can you still drop the data without penalty?

thanks again.
