Bluetooth Headset Voice Dialing

Has anyone found a way or App that will allow you to voice dial using a bluetooth headset. This is a basic bluetooth task yet the highly technical Droid doesn't come from Motorola with this simple function.

I think it is a limitation of Android in general and not any specific android phone.
It is a feature that really should have been implemented quite a while ago.

Regarding your concern, please note that there are two methods to voice dial from your phone:

1. Use Google Search

2. Use Voice Dialer

To use Google Search to voice dial:

1. Press and hold the SEARCH button.
You’re prompted to speak.

2. Say >Call” followed by the name of the contact you want to call.

If Google search by voice finds a match, it dials the contact’s default number.

To use the Voice Dialer Application

1. Open the Applications Menu
2. Touch Voice Dialer
3. Say your command
4. * Call "John Doe"
* Dial "John Doe, home"

Unfortunately the Voice Dialing cannot be initiated from a headset, you must turn it on from the phone. At this time the using Bluetooth for voice dialing only supports dialing last number. A full featured version may be available via the Android Marketplace.

I also contacted Moto again this time using their chat screen and I got the following. It sounds as if they at least are aware of the problem if not working on it.

You can answer a call or initiate the ‘last dialed call’ by pressing and holding the call button on your headset.

You can initiate voice-dial using the Google Search or Voice Dial options from the phone itself..

Evelina A: We are currently evaluating possible solutions for providing voice dialing over Bluetooth. So far we do not have a time frame defined for this; however the update will be provided through a software update process.

There is an obvious problem here. Someone dropped the ball, and I think we all will suffer for it. SIMPLE, BASIC, functon, NOT on the Droid. Bullshit, with voice dialer etc. I should be able to call any number in my contacts lis w/o touching my damn phone. Why are all these people sugesting long press on green button etc???? That's crap. HANDSFREE!!! Less distraction while driving, Convenient when cooking, cleaning, whatever?? Come on Motorola...Thats like no ABS on ur car.....

I cannot stand calling and listening to these people . They are like Droids(haha) reading out of a book. They truley do not know or understand the product. WE WANT VOICE DIALING FROM OUR DROID PHONE so that when we are driving we dont have to take our phone out of the holster/case and look at it !

I can tell you are young; ABS is not a deal breaker either. I race cars on the weekend, ABS along with traction control gets turned off before I even think about winning a race. And I would never consider using a phone of course and have no desire to be making calls on the drive home. I don't suffer in the least for lack of voice dialing.

Contrary to your belief, bluetooth voice dialing has been a solved problem for over a decade. Some of my engineers worked on the early bluetooth specs and that was a significant part of the standard. Motorola owns the code for one of the solutions that was found in all their early bluetooth enabled handsets. Unfortunately, Google decided to re-invent the wheel. When you do voice dialing on an Android phone it sends it out to the cloud for a google-hosted application to parse and then sends the results back to the phone. The application code for this doesn't support the bluetooth standard. In fact the entire bluetooth standard is poorly support in the OS. There is no excuse for not supporting voice dialing via bluetooth, except technical incompetence or a "not invented here" mentality by the engineers that worked on this part of the OS.

Hands free dialing is not just car-centric. I require it in my workplace as I am on a keyboard or walking between meetings and do not want to go find my phone, pick it up to dial, switch it to hands free so I can talk, etc., etc.. I also use it at home . . . note I am older so texting is not the center of my life so I use all of the features of a phone. My son kept his droid, I have returned mine until this problem is solved and went back to my Moto flip phone. According to contacts in Verizon, there are several thousand returns because of this lack of support.

LOL.. You're kidding me. You discard the obvious benefits of abs and never talk on the phone while driving. That is absurd. In this day and age Bluetooth handsfree voice dialing is standard and expected and could be considered a safety feature. Putting a bluetooth emblem on a device and not having handsfree voice dialing is like having srs on the dash and side but saying yeah it has srs but the airbags don't deploy. Your reasoning takes it further because you'd say.. "I disable them because getiing ejected from the windshield is a better alternative."

Quick question, IF you have a BT headset that has it's own built in Voice dialing (BlueAnt Q1) will it work on the Droid? I have one coming as was curious it is will work that way.

If no one knows I will update if it works when my Q1 gets here.

LOL. hey opinions differ. I wouldn't return my phone because voice dialing doesn't function. But by the opinions here this means that Android phones suck and I should be the only one using them because a few functions aren't yet working and I don't see them as vital. yippee for designing some BT, I still say it is a sucky technology. Handy but I don't expect much from it. Reminds me of Dolby and the licensing scheme it has.

As for ABS, you're out to lunch. I can stop shorter without ABS than you can with it. Not opinion, simple physics and the training to do it. Not at all like BT's deficiencies but a car analogy is always popular. or so I thought.

Well I'm out of this thread because I don't care enough about voice dialing or to argue about it. And no, I don't talk on the phone while driving, never did, never will. And for the few seconds between meetings I don't need the phone either or at least don't whine if it doesn't work like in the movies. yawn

You do know what they call people who use the words never and always? Remember what you said when your phone rings and you answer it while driving.

I am pretty sure I can remember serviceable handsfree wired voice dialing all the way back to my startac days and great bluetooth handsfree dialing since my razor, motorokr, mogul, touch pro. No justifications are good excuses on a $550 phone.

I tap the button and there's my call. But I don't *ever* make calls while driving and so far only took one inbound call while in the car. So whatever technicality that is, well, yawn.

Those are terms that make people liars as you just did because you "never" use the phone on in the car and now you have taken an incoming call. Anyone who has a cell phone who says they never take a call in the car has to be a blatant liar or a 1 in a million exception.

Terrible reasoning and is just nonsesnical. ABS stopping distances are shorter than without in most conditions and for the majority of drivers. Look up the tests... Most people are not trained racecar drivers like you who know how to pump their brakes without panicking upder pressure.

Ok folks, the ABS analogy was simply that every car has one these days whether you like it or not. For all the techy experts that can stop w/o it fine. I am simply saying that BT Voice command is the most common of features even in phones costing so much less. I am HAPPY with the Droid overall. I am not one to return it b/c of the lack of this feature...BUT it should have it.....

I have never used a BT headset before, and I don't talk much on my phone while driving...

That said, I have decided to get a headset for my Droid. Not having BT voice dial won't kill me, but it sure would be nice! I hope they get this resolved, especially for the people who have used it a lot in the past, and need to be able to do so with the Droid...

@bruceo I'm done with this thread and I'll be sure to stay out of your way. I don't need to be scrutinized to such an extent by amateur lawyers or whatever that is. But don't pretend to know how I or anyone else uses their phone. I went many years without a cell phone so I find it easy to avoid using it in my car. If testing a BT headset in the car one time makes me a liar then that's your call and I don't care what strangers think. Perhaps I'm just old but I learned to use brakes without ABS long before becoming a race car driver so I stand by my own knowledge and not any so called study. All these safety features have done nothing to make people better drivers, quite the opposite and now we're dependent on them. I'll keep my seatbelts, airbags, and even the ABS but just because I now have a cell phone and someday voice dialing I'll still not need to drive while talking on the phone. I use that other technology, voice mail.

This really IS a major issue. In states such as NY and CA (and apparently also in the UK), it's a violation to be fiddling with the phone at all while driving. I love the phone otherwise, but I can't believe that this basic feature isn't present in Android phones. Hopefully 2.0.2 will fix it.....SOON.

From what I remember, BT dialing was supposed to be a part of the 12/11 2.01 update.

The list of fixes that's been posted doesn't clarify...this could include just about anything...but I remember a more detailed list that included fixing BT dialing in the 2.01 release.

I thought i was having problems with my bluetooth as well, thought my bluetooth didnt work, was disappointed that they didnt integrate bluetooth calling, should have been a simple feature to put in, makes it harder when your driving.
