Potential for alternate OSes on Captivate

Good day,

I am wondering about alternate OSes on Captivate. I know this won't happen for a long while, but what are the odds of:

- Linux (perhaps Ubuntu, as this has been ported to the Nexus One)
- Bada (due to similarities with the Wave phone also by Samsung)

and, to the chagrin of many posters here,

- Windows Mobile 6 (or 7?)

Is there any chance some or all of these will be ported to the Captivate? I know Windows Mobile sucks, and I love Android, but the idea of experimentation is exciting to me. No flames please. (Ok, just one flame, no more than that.)

I would think that Ubuntu is entirely likely, especially after all of the upcoming updates (maverick meerkat and natty narwhal) which are supposed to add gesture support (like pinch-zooming, swiping, etc). Plus, the Galaxy S' are a step up from the Nexus in terms of internal memory, so dual-booting would probably be an option if GRUB or BURG could be loaded...

Bada almost certainly would be if one had access to the drivers and such, and I am sure that WP7 would be able to as well, with some hacking and probably pirating...

About it being a long while though, I think Ubuntu could probably be done now as it has already been used on other devices (as well as other linux distros- I think someone had Debian at one time, and maybe openSUSE). So it is feasible now.

The question is though why? Out of all of these options Android is the most optimized for the hardware, and the most optimized and fully featured for a smartphone, so why rock the boat? Now a tablet (like the Galaxy Tab) dual-booting Ubuntu on the other hand...

Agreed about the Galaxy Tab booting Ubuntu. I would love to be able to run programs like Ardour and other linux digital audio workstation software on the Captivate, so an Ubuntu port would be great for me. From my very limited understanding, X11 apps are not easy to port to Android in spite of Android's Linux heritage... so I am assuming an Ubuntu port would be the only way to take advantage of that robust software. It would just be so cool!

Then again, I'm sure a decent audio/MIDI sequencer/DAW will come out for Android fairly soon, as well as a video editing program like iMovie on iOS. Here's hoping!

Well, Android phones are already running Linux, as all "Linux" is is a/the kernel. But apparently you meant specific Linux distros, X.org, etc.

Felt it was worth clarifying that, either for you or other readers.
