Google Maps - Custom Route with Turn By Turn Directions?

Frustrating - but apparently the capability is I can customize a route online with Google Maps, save it to my maps and send it to the phone but it sends the static map.

Ridiculously, all this power and I can't take those directions from the PC and turn them into turn by turn directions on the phone.

What's the deal?

Any third party apps anyone is using?

I'm brand new to Android (just got my Vibrant 2 days ago), and I came across Google Navigation when I was using my Google Maps program today. It was VERY cool, as it offered complete GPS directions including voice saying things like "500 feet, turn left at X street"

The nav does do turn by turn directions, and it essentially eliminates the need for a GPS device. Software isn't quite as good as the Garmin or even GM nav interface, but it is more than usable no question.

The issue being discussed here is when you don't want to use one of the routes presented - there is no way to create your own route or modify a google route, either on a PC or the handheld, and still get turn by turn directions.

This would be very handy in areas where the "fastest" route isn't the quickest and where you would like to share an alternate route with a group or save it for yourself.

But it appears that I am late to the game which is good - hopefully google is working on it already.

So, it's been a year. I'm still looking for a way to create a custom map, put it on my Bionic, and hear turn-by-turn directions while I ride my bike, so I don't need to look at the screen.

By 'custom map' I mean a route I define rather than just giving point A and point B, because when I go out on my bike, A and B are the same. My goal is to be able to cover certain streets and take certain paths, etc.

Someone told me to try MapMyRide, but I couldn't figure out if it did what I wanted or not.

If all you want is custom Point A to Point B directions with Navigation, there is an easy way to do it as was mentioned in another thread here.

Create a custom route on your computer's web browser Google maps and email it to yourself. Then you open the email on your phone, click "Show On Google Maps", and you get the custom route with Turn by Turn directions for it. I've used this for several long distance trips it works great.

This does not work for someone who wants turn-by-turn voice prompts using the Nav. If you can read while you're driving/riding it's fine. But if you're say, on a motorcycle taking a scenic tour using your phone and earbuds, your method doesn't work.

This seems like such a simple thing to do. Farmers use this function while harvesting corn and wheat. Not sure why it can't be implemented in consumer navigation devices.

I think it's the same request as in an other thread, so the same answer :)

Take a look at 'BestRoute'.
I think it's a close approach at your request :)

BestRoute looks like it has most of the desired functionality, but requires Honeycomb. Need Gingerbread support for Bionic.

Also, it appears to do most direct routings between multiple stops. What is really desired for a motocyclist is a custom route over many miles, not most efficient route w/ x number of stops like a delivery man would use.

MapMyRide looks like MyTracks - a useful tool to show where you've been, but not a custom map that you can use Google Navigation to guide you.

Build multipoint routes and save them to phone/tablet. Cache map tiles also for use in low/no tower range areas. Uses open streetmap layers and services. GUI is highly customizable, and includes audio turn by turn directions. Read more at andsnow.com
