I finally got the answer to what the D icon is by verizon techs which stand for Digital signal in regards to calling not data. This should be on in most cases right? meaning that if your not seeing this D then your using an analog signal which could contribute to the poor call quality for some.

When I first got the Fascinate this D showed up every ones in a while but then did the *228 option 2 then I got this constant D which lead me to this quest to find out what it was.

Now the question is does every one get this icon in a consistent bases?

Analog doesn't exist anymore, it's all been shut off as of 2007 I believe. You're always in digital signal. Whether you're in 3G or 1X, that's digital. You would have seen an A if you were in analog but these phones aren't even analog capable. You'll see the D when your data session isn't active. Meaning it's went dormant. That's all it means. When your data session is active and transferring you'll see the arrows.

If this was true then why doesn't the galaxy s tech higher levels know this. Second I can proved this D shows on other phone which states what it actually is and last Verizon Techs confirmed this twice. You may be right but you haven't shown any proof of this to change my mind specialy after verizon twice stated what it was.

I'm not sure what you're misunderstanding. What I said sounds the same as what you said they said above. It has to do more with calling then it actually does data. When you see the D it means there isn't a data session active so it shows you have a digital signal for calls basically. When a data session is active the arrows basically just override the D because it's active. You should think of it that the D is still there it's just hidden by the arrows because the data is active at that time.

If you were in the business or any tech business even you'd realize that people that work for these companies wouldn't know things like this unless they were a technological geek. Most employees only know what they're trained on and what the scripts in front of them tell them. They don't get any training on what the D on the phone means and honestly I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them didn't even know what you were talking about unless they saw it. They're going to try and find something in a manual or something that references it and then they're going to give you their best guess to try and satisfy you and get you off the phone.

I honestly don't even know what else to say. You said something about other phones can prove what it is. I'm not sure what that means. If they have a description it should basically be what I just explained.

EDIT: You can pretty much see what I'm talking about with a little messing around. Make sure you're not connected to Wifi so you can see the 3G and arrows and stuff. Then make sure you aren't doing anything using data. It should turn to the D. Then as soon as you use the data the arrows will return. You could also mess with the settings and see if you can find where to turn off data. I know other Android phones have an option to turn off 3G data, not sure if the Fascinate does or not, I haven't looked. If it does, and you turn off data then you should continuously get the D.

Well, I liked and understood your second explanation and would agree with most of what you stated. So we agree that the D does represents Digital.

I did try what you stated an can see why you came up with this conclusion. But let me add a twist to this. I live in an area that has a week 3g and 1x but explain to me why does the D go away when no data is being used and if you try to call its a hit a miss or very bad call quality. But a soon as this D comes back I can call and get great call quality.???

I all so tried this in another area with the same results:thinking:

Coming from the communications world, the 'D' does NOT mean Digital.

It means 'Dormant'. ie, the data transfer link has gone to sleep to conserve bandwidth on the carrier's system. Nothing else. this is NOT a Verizon thing. It is a consistent system wide thing and it shows up on all systems.

Back when 1x was all we had, and my company's trucks were being track by GPS modems, that 'D' would pop up to indicate that the truck was NOT being tracked in real time. The truck would have to move 1/4 mile before the modem switched from the Dormant Mode to the 'Active Mode (Real Time)'

Again, the 'D' does not mean Digital. Not today, and never has.

Our trucks freely roam thru Verizon, Alltel (years ago), and AT&T. that 'D' was there on all of them, and it always meant the same thing. Dormant = Release the channel and go to sleep.
