IMO marketing is their only hurdle......

if you ask most people on the street... they have no clue that Android is an OS....they simply think its different style of phone..... all they know is iPhone and Android are made by different companies... its slowly coming around but overall the vast majority of the public doesnt realize that a phone even has an operating system or what that means

this is part of why VZW went with putting the word Droid in so many phones..... droid incredible, etc........ unless a person is into the phone scene they have no clue that Samsung Fascinate is an Android phone.... or what it even means to be an Android phone vs an iPhone....... they just know theyve heard the word iPhone for years so its going to get their vote unless theyre educated through marketing

American carriers determined to cripple phones with crapware, with Motorola and HTC as their eager and willing bit^h^h^hhandmaidens.

Android's ultimate savior: Chinese companies making phones that can be flashed to just about anything, with few hard limits and no arbitrary restrictions (at least, as long as you plan to use the phone OUTSIDE of China).

I'd say marketing as well. Google's intent to allow OEM's to take Android and do whatever they want to it doesn't really lend itself to a strong branding of Android. The hurdle is informing the mass of consumers out there. People here tend to focus on issues that affect the enthusiasts but enthusiasts only make up a tiny fraction of the overall market. It's swaying the masses that really makes the difference in the bigger picture. I doubt the masses care about crapware or crippling as they're not power users.

this^^ a lot of times when people come into my store they want a "droid". When I show them the LG Ally or the Samsung Fascinate, they don't think it's a "droid". I then have to explain to them that android is like windows and runs on many different brands. Then I also explain how motorola are marketing geniuses and named their first android phone the "motorola DROID" thus making everyone think it was the one and only "droid" phone
