Question about 2.2 update - Memory Space

Just got myself a desire (unlocked and unbranded). I check today for updates and a message came on the screen saying the 2.2 update was available. I only have 36MB of space left on the phone (installed quite a few apps)yet the update is a massive 91MB. Will I need to uninstall apps to install the update?

Thanks.

I'm afraid so, it will tell you how much free space you need after you have downloaded the update, I just removed some Google stuff and reinstalled after the update. Go for it ;)

Are you sure about that ScottyPro? I really don't think that's the case. In fact, i'm pretty certain its not. The whole point of an update is that it restores users data afterwards. You should be able to update leaving all apps and data untouched. There is no way people would have to delete all their data just to update. I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. Someone verify please....

Not if you don't have enough free space I had to delete some apps to free up some space . If I remember I only had about 20 meg free when upgrading

Well I did the update this morning. I didn't have to delete any apps but I did have to do a full reset after the update because it said android place was no longer installed on my phone. Like the idea of moving stuff to the SD card as that will come in handy. Im reinstalling all my fav apps at the moment. One thing I don't understand though is why I havn't got the '3D' look to the apps menu and new look menu screen with the different buttons on the bottom or is that in a further update?

What 3D look menu and screen are we talking about, any links to pics. I didn't notice anything different when I upgraded screen/menu wise, but I have Launcherpro now so its irrelevant

The 3D look is a beta feature in LauncherPro, I don't think it's part of Android.

The update memory can be confusing. The memory where Android 2.2 is stored is a closed off partition and is available to the operating system only - it's not the 'storage' memory that you install and run apps from. You need about 25mb free storage memory when you update, which is used by the phone as 'working space' for temp files during installation.

So I gather 2.2 froyo isn't out yet for the desire? Sorry if I sound a bit thick as Im a bit new to android devices.

Just read that the update will be released around november?

2.2 is out for the desire.

But you wouldn't actually need 2.2.

Each manufacturer makes a different version of android. Its more of a skin though. So if you get a nexus one its made by google, so you get the official basic android software. If you buy an htc phone, you get the same basic android software, but with htc sense on top. So to get your 3d things you need to get rid of htc sense. This requires rooting....

Not exactly. As mentioned, you could use an alternative launcher from the market. Launcherpro is very good and has everything the OP is missing. Its actually better than the standard android launcher too.
