BACKGROUND

It looks like poor old rom.tgz got forgotten long ago. I intend to bring it back, to show people that rom.tgz is the most powerful & versatile ROM distribution format. I also want to demonstrate that ROMs based on the OTA do not suck.

If you were ever into the Windows Mobile ROM scene (particularly Touch Pro/Touch Pro 2) you might recognize the Baseline name. I decided to continue the name because I like it, and I consider my ROM to be pretty much as baseline as it gets while still maintaining usefulness. Plus I think it's a clever double-entendre that you will hopefully discover. My philosophy is minimalism in the pursuit of stability, speed and battery life.

I made a ROM for the Droid because I cannot run AOSP-based ROM's due to some Exchange server problems. I took the OTA and rolled it into what I think is the ideal package. I ripped off the features I missed from AOSP-based ROMs like Sapphire and CyanogenMod and added them to the OTA ROM. I also wrote a theming routine that runs during install so it's easy to switch colors. This does the same thing as MetaMorph, but in recovery so as to not disturb any of your settings (Not to mention it takes about 30 seconds to apply each color - MM took at least 5 -7 minutes if I recall correctly). Remember having to reset widgets and log into your accounts over and over when applying framework MetaMorphs? You won't have to worry about this here. You will not find any fluff in this ROM.

To give you an idea, I consider wifi, apps2sd & tethering to be fluff. Not to worry, if you want these functions just select the Slayher kernel when given the choice at the end of installation. My kernel is 2.4MB and I think it is a speed demon. I set it to 1100MHZ at 1.525v, that was the lowest stable voltage *MY* Droid could run. If you can't run my kernel then just install another one via update.zip or whatever method you want.

You can "reinstall" the ROM over and over to swap between colors, just do not tell it to wipe anything if you value your data.

This ROM contains deep edits and may render certain market apps unusable (black on black, white on white). If there is a demand for the popular apps to be fixed I will do my best to satisfy the requests.

INSTRUCTIONS

Install SPRecovery if necessary. Then put the rom.tgz in the root of your SD card and boot into recovery. Select Install>Choose ROM from SD card. A backup will be created automatically and then the pre-installation script begins:

Your first choice will be whether or not you would like to wipe system. say yes in most cases unless you are just changing themes. Same goes for data and cache. Next the system will install itself and the post-install script will begin:

You will be prompted to select your theme. If you do not wish to change the theme (if just changing kernels) select the last option. During theming the colors will be applied and every themed APK zipaligned. At this point you will be asked to choose a kernel or leave what you've already got installed. This should be self-explanatory. Use mine if you want what I run, use slayher's if you want the fancy stuff. Use your current one if you want. Once you do this symlinks will be created. Launcher Pro & Spare Parts will be installed next. They will be installed to /data so that they can be updated

You must activate your phone if coming from any other ROM. After this you can do whatever you want, but I encourage you to set the animation speeds to fast in spare parts. This will be done automatically once I figure out how.

Did I mention this ROM is NOT FROM SOURCE. Any of the features that are typically only in AOSP-based ROMs have been done in dalvik bytecode via JesusFreke's smali/baksmali suite. It is built off of the FRG22D OTA, the same thing Bugless Beast is made from. I made it for fun, and to learn the rom.tgz ways. I hope you find it useful.

I remember Baseline from WinMo stuff...I had an omnia (verizon version, NOT GSM) and I remember a lot of people talking about it.

Anyway, nice looking ROM. I think I may try it out...UD 1.0.0 has been giving me some little quirks here and there lol

Also, can I install thru Clockwork Recovery?

Though I use Clockwork I am considering installing JUST because you have one of the best NIN songs going in the screenshot.

Can you give an idea of the features that you took from these other ROMS and added in?

requires SPR, features I added are:

long press back to kill app
volume button music controls (hold vol up to skip track, vol down to go back, hold cam button to pause)
and the reboot menu (reboot and reboot to recovery)

if this rom is everything raidZero says it is it will be my dream come true. I have been waiting for a not from source rom that has the volume controls.

EDIT:

So two things I noticed immediately:
It seems to not download your apps from the market automatically
The music controls work backwards to how they work on other roms. When i hold volume up it goes to the previous track. When I hit vol down it goes to the next track.

So I really like the rom but there is one major issue that is making me have to go away from it. The theme has a lot of places where there is black background with black text. one of which is in google voice. this is a no go for me since I only use google voice for texts. I don't know how hard it is to flash this without a theme (stock theme) but if there was an option for that then I would definitely come back

I noticed this as well. raidzero is currently working on v0.2 which should resolve those issues as well as add some features. Link here.

As far as the music control goes, I just took the feature from cvpc's github, its easy to reverse the buttons though, decompile android.policy.jar and change phonewindowmanager.smali where it calls phonewindowmanager$3 (vol up) and phonemanager$5 (vol down)

Installed v 0.2 and I like it a lot. glad the stock theme is there. only issue I have is that sometimes if you use the volume rocker controls to much in a short about of time (keep going to the next song) then the phone freaks out and keeps skipping to the next song without u clicking anything and the only way to stop it is to reboot the phone. I know this issue has occurred for me on the Sapphire roms which i believe is where you got the feature from. strangely enough though it has never happened on any CM rom I have used that has a diff implementaton of the same feature.
