So, I would like to assign separate ringtones for my gmail and sms alerts. Apparently, the Android system groups these together; I can assign a different tone for regular email, but not gmail, as the Android system groups them under "notifications."

Is there an app out there for this?

You can do this with the stock OS on the Droid X.

Open GMail
Menu / More / Settings / Email Notification settings

Open Messaging (sms)
Menu / Messaging Settings / Text messaging / Text messaging settings

Open Messaging (all other email)
Menu / Messaging Settings / Email / Notifications

I'm not sure what the general Settings / Sound / Notification Ringtone is for. I set it different than the 3 above, but the notification sound was always what I selected in the programs, not in the OS settings menu.

I never had this type of issue on Windows Mobile. But I am getting used to the Android and its hidden settings though. My current issue, is the sms notification. For the last 4 months, I changed the sms notification sound to more of my liking, but it keeps resetting to the Android default sound- Pizzicato. Then I check to change it again, but I notice the sound I choose is marked off.

Done this:
1. settings>sound & display>notification sound> choose my sound>ok
2. on sms>menu>settings>checked off notifications>select ringtone>choose my sound>ok

Both did not work. Any suggestions?

1. settings>sound & display>notification sound> choose my sound>ok
As stated in my post just before yours, this setting is for notification when you receive a voicemail.

2. on sms>menu>settings>checked off notifications>select ringtone>choose my sound>ok

What phone do you have? For the Droid X, it's Messaging / Menu / Messaging settings /
then select either Text messaging or Social Messaging and turn on or off notifications for each there.

If you are using a 3rd party app for texts and SMS (Handcent, Chomp, etc) it's best to turn off both of the above and use the settings in the 3rd party app for notifications.

Kinda but theres alot more. That is the default sound that will be used for ALL notifications until you change them individually. Thats email, sms/mms, calendar, voicemails etc.
