CAUTION - Manditory Voice Mail Update!

This afternoon all is well with my Hero and in the Notification box comes a little reel to reel notice. I scroll it down and it it says "A mandatory update is not available" for voice mail. When you click it the download automatically starts and you get a new voice mail application on your phone advertising a free one month voice mail to text service. Before I could cancel it, it was done. So I poke through it to see what I have now and it's a big advertising push from Sprint giving you a 30 day free trial and after that you have to cancel it if you don't want it. Well I don't want it NOW! Plus there is an advertising banner NOW on your voice mail screen that you CAN NOT get rid of! I spent 40 minutes with Sprint tech support and the bottom line was reset my phone and loose everything and rebuild the phone from scratch. This is NEVER and option for me. I accidentally pressed the activate button with the tech trying to get rid of this and now my phone will do a day by day 30 day count down. Lucky for me as my phone is rooted and I restored to an earlier version. But still I can't get rid of this icon in the notification area unless I install this download.

Be very careful. If this is what you want then go after it but if you want Sprint putting more junk on your phone then beware.

I don't have a solution for this but just putting the warning out there..........

I installed this Sprint Visual Voicemail update a few weeks ago. It had a nag screen for the voice to text transcription service for a little while, but that went away eventually.

I am sorry you accidentally signed up for the service I mentioned above. However, the only way to get rid of the notification is to download the update and install it, but opt out of the voice to text transcription service.

Well in my humble opinion you are very lucky. That nonsense hit my phone with a vengeance. My Hero was exactly like I wanted it and this stranger came into my house. Took a lot of gymnastics but I succeeded to get Sprints voice mail COMPLETELY out of my phone. I installed Google Voice and I'm not looking back. The only problem is I have to get used to another program. But Damn Sprint for shoving a pay feature on my phone without my permission.

I don't remember any "vengeance" when I got it.

It downloaded, told be about the $1.99 voice mail to text option, I DID NOT select that I wanted it and the app went on it's merry way

Reading the threads about this I have looked at some of the other apps and they just seam to be a lot of extra work for something that already works just fine.

Read before you select and don't OPT IN if you don't want the feature

Personally I NEVER fault a company for trying to make money

I pretty much agree what you said and that was my experience with the updated Sprint Visual Voicemail app as well. I just updated it and opted out of the extra service with no fuss.

I do, however, also agree with mslisaj that the nag screen for the voice to text transcription service was annoying for a while. Thankfully it went away eventually, though there is still a button to sign up for it in the Sprint Visual Voicemail app itself.

Same here, I flashed over to Liquidsense Rom to update my PRL, and also updated the VVM and did not check mark the text, then flashed my AOSP ROM back, and no issues ;)

Here's a clue if you opted in and erased your phone, guess what you are still paying for it untill you cancel with Sprint, whether it's on the phone or not. I am testing it, it is kind of handy for me at work, I can just read my voice mails. Not sure it is even worth the $1.99 though.

I think she called Sprint and canceled the opt-in. I could be wrong though. :D

I think I am going to try the Google Voice voice to text service after I try a new ROM. Who can argue with free versus $1.99 a month? :)

You guys and Google voice, try Youmail and you will never look back, I am telling much better than GV and you can make a custom greeting to your contacts and they love being greeted by there names, you can black list peeps, you have many options, you can have (this number is no longer in service) which is nice if you get a same telemarketer that keeps on calling, try it , it's free ;)

Er yeah, I guess when I said Google Voice, I also meant YouMail, but forgot to put it. Whoops. :D

By the way, DonB, I like your new avatar. Mostly because I am as excited about the Gingerbread ROMs that are coming as you are. ;)

Well you guys had a nicer experience with VVM then I did. It by passed screens or something. As I mentioned while working with a tech to get it removed I accidently opted in. It wasn't pleasant. Plus the Damn tech wasted all my time as he didn't know anything about the update. But yes called I called customer service and had it put in the record I didn't want the service and wasn't paying for it.

I'm going to give Youmail a good lookover and a try too.

My suggestion would be to save it as a PNG file instead of JPG. The JPG you have for your avatar seems to show a lot of compression artifacts. ;)

PNG would give you a nice crisp image without the artifacts, but still is way smaller than a regular bitmap. Give it a try. :)

I will host it online and see what that does for the heck of it

Hey, DonB..................

I'm investigating Youmail and have a few questions. As you know I did the GVM thing and I Have that on my phone now. Do I need to uninstall that first?

Next Do I just download the app from the market? Does it prompt me though the set up or do I go to the website to do it.

Can you tell me what I need to do to set this up? Is there an app that runs on my PC too?? You youmail website is very sparse at least for what I was looking for on information. You know me I like to know what I'm doing before I do it.............

Thanks for your help........

Well DonB, I did install Youmail and set it up and tried it. While the interface was a lot prettier then Google Voice and you could change those stock greetings around and indeed have fun with it I was looking for a more utilitarian Voice mail that had a real caller ID and I have to say the Google Voice, in my opinion wins hands down. When I would call Youmail from my other cell phone the caller ID didn't work. Yes it got my number on it but no name or anything. Google Voice got my picture, name and number. Of course it was taking it from my phone's contact list but Youmail didn't do it. The sound quality was better with Youmail and my Android didn't seem to have the lag that the Google Voice had but all in all I uninstalled the Youmail and went back to Google.............

It was well worth the try and I do appreciate the suggestion.

Have a great weekend.........

1. Are there any NEW ENHANCEMENTS in this update rather than the NAG or Signing up for the trial service?

2. What might happen if I do not install the update?

I have noticed that I am still receiving my regular voice mail service even though I have received the update notice and have not ran it. Hopefully, it will continue to do so. Unfortunately, there is no way to delete the annoucement of the mandatory update from the notice screen, or is there?

Thanks

First you can create your own messages, and you do that by logging into your Youmail account from your PC, then you hook a mic up and create your own custom greetings, second I get all Caller ID's and photos when people call me, this is where you login to your account to check your setting and create your personal v/mails, your issue maybe something in your settings, I have not checked mine in a while since I have set mine up about a year ago, YouMail Sign In

You can have it email or text you when you have a message left, and you do not need to use the youmail app to listen your your messages, you can also listen to them right from your email. Look below at a screen shot of how I have my alerts set up see attached >>>>>>>> You mail alerts.jpg

Here is another screen shot to customize your greeting, and of course you do not need to use a PC, you can call the number and do your personal greeting by phone also, you are overwhelmed right now, keep play with the app and you will see many things you can do with it, and also you have the forum site I gave you if you are not sure about something post a question there !! Greetings setup.jpg I am putting the image like this because it is too big for the thread so simply click on it

Also here is the youmail community with a bunch of pre recorded messages, http://www.youmail.com/community/home.do

I will certainly agree with that comment and I don't care if it's Google Voice, Sprint Voice to Text or Youmail. That technology is not ready for prime time in my opinion. I'm pretty good at deciphering cryptic text messages but I can't even ready my own voice mails that I made. I realize the how it works and all that and I guess in reality it's a good try but certainly NOT worth paying for at this time in it's growth.
