Official "New Android Market" Discussion thread!

I think this week or next. I don't like it so far. So much more they could have done and I am a bit skeptical about the 15 minute refund window. I know it cuts down on piracy but as many have mentioned. I have had an app run fine for a couple hours then I realize it drains the heck out of my battery or doesn't work well with other applications.

I don't know WHAT they were smoking when making that 15-minute rule. I mean really.. So often I dl an app, and don't even LOOK at it inside 15 min, much less decide if it's a keeper or not. Musta been smokin that good ish. We all need to raise a big enough stink about it so they change it back, or at minimum just longer than 15 min.

And yeah, I can't wait for the new Market either- the current one is needle-in-a-haystack browsing.

Yeah...that's messed up.

If you're trying something like Tasker, or a RDP client, etc you can barely test the BASIC functionality of the app in 15 minutes.

anyway to get it without root?

I would assume since you install the apk from a file manager (Astro, etc) that you wouldn't need root. I'm not 100% certain though. I haven't even installed it yet and I am rooted. I'm going to get on that now actually

Edit: I just downloaded and installed via Astro. When d/ling the phone said there was no application available to open it with but I had no issue upgrading. Under vending (which the market is called...vending.apk) I opened with app manager and there was an upgrade button which i clicked on. I noticed there are a TON of Chinese apps now. It's a decent cosmetic upgrade though. 15 minute app refund is BS, IMO. I know pirating apps is a huge problem for developers but 15 minutes is pointless.

I just opened the market and have the new one. I didn't do anything to update it; I didn't even accept an update. It's just there.

I kind of hate that half of the screen is taken up with the dashboard at the top when you're browsing apps. I think that should be collapsible to free up real estate.

And I really hate the 15 minute thing. That's just not enough time to evaluate some apps.

Agreed- it will actually PROMOTE piracy. If I were a dev, I still wouldn't like it.

I agree. I think a lot of people will search for apk's and install those before buying a paid app. If it's a good app hopefully most people will then buy it to support the dev's. To go from 24 hours to 15 minutes is crazy. 10-12 hours would have been a good amount of time, IMO

I had the old Market this morning. I was having troubles getting the new right updated Voice Search, so wiped data and started over. I was able to get the Voice Search, and also had the new market for some reason. I'm going back to my nandroid backup, however, since I didn't want to redo all my home screens and settings.

Also, 15 minutes is a joke. Need at least a couple of hours. 24 hours was a great selling point for Android, and it was essentially a trial version of an app. Now the market will explode with even more "lite" versions of apps. Ugh.

They are also banking on things like the fact that people usually only buy apps that others are Highly satisfied with, such as Tasker. I read about it and was slowed down by the $5 price tag. I eventually bought it after reading the enormous things you could do with it. Also, a lot of people will download the app and forget to remove it in the 15 minutes which makes money for the Developers as well as Google. I agree that 24 hours was a long time, and that 15 minutes is not long enough. The 10-12 hour window sounds more appealing.

Maybe this is one of the ways Google plans on promoting the better apps that are in the market, since they will be in the carousel. This way it gets people to try out the app, and encourages Developers to make their apps stand out more that a "hidden treasure" like some of the apps that are out now, such as the 8pen keyboard; which takes about 15 minutes to get used to btw, which would have sucked when it was a paid app.

No shit man. Who ever came up with that rule was a freaking moron. I can see putting it on game apps, but not system apps or general use apps. I have a simple solution for you Google ... only put the 15 min rule on Games. Frigging bone heads.
