Help New Evo user. Tips needed.

Well I went into Bestbuy tonight to drop off my laptop for repair and walked out with an EVO. I am a former HTC Hero person and have been tossing the idea around about upgrading.

With Bestbuy only charging me $199 straight up and avoiding the hassle of rebates through Sprint, I went for it. I also went ahead and changed my insurance to Bestbuys instead of sprints.

So now that I have my EVO, any recommendations on anything I need to do or get from the apps market to enjoy my new toy?

Thank you,
Whiteice.

There are lots of threads here that'll give you tips on apps, but I'll name a few that are helpful/fun:

AppBrain
Angry Birds
WinAmp
DoodleBowl
Lazik (if you use winamp on your pc)
Remote For iTunes (if you use iTunes)
GetGlue
FourSquare
Google Voice
Handcent
BattStatt

Also read some of the battery tips threads to make sure you don't kill your phone's battery for no good reason. :)

From the galaxy s captivate, to the Evo 4G!
I got the white one, it looks amazing.

So far im loving compared to the captivate. Every app opens and runs faster. The browser is faster. Ive barly got 4G but i didnt buy it for that anyways.

One of my friends who has the captivate is jealous lol.
Only thing i dont like about the evo as much is the screen quality (colors and stuff, the Super Amoled screen ruled) and no swype.

Unless you can get swype somehow??
I need all the suggestions and tips on this phone!

Thanks guys!

I just got my evo yesterday too. Isn't it great?

I searched google for swype evo and it only took about 10 minutes to find some working links. I think supposedly the same version that works on ours works on the nexus too. I tried a few versions that didn't work until I found a copy of 2.4.44.10912 that works great minus the voice button, but handcent has that so it isn't a big dealio.

If yours is new and has a 3.30 software variant on it be careful with the rooting of it. It can be done but you have to follow the directions to the t and have a little background knowledge too. I haven't done mine yet but I'm reading up on it. I'll probably root in a few weeks. It isn't as big of a deal to make the rom work right, it's mainly to remove bloat and run wifi tether for me.

Do your homework.

As far as tips, I suggest reading the "post your screens" thread in this forum. I learned more and found more useful apps there than I have found anywhere else. Lots of good info in that thread.

Welcome, you're going to appreciate your EVO more everyday. By the way, be sure to root it too, then your head will explode with the endless options to change it around, not to mention extended battery time and wireless tethering.

Honestly, im to scarred to root it.
I dont know what im doing and i dont really wanna risk screwing it up you know?

I don't have my Evo yet... Have to wait a few more days. And just to be clear I'm not talking about talking and it changes your voice into a text message. I'm talking about something that sends voice as texts... Is this what your implying?

That's called Voicemail :D

lol, yeah. I just dont know if i trust myself is all.
How much better is it? What are some of the good advantages?

Well the speed and better battery life are a big deal for me. I slow down my cpu when the screen is off to save battery and overclock it when the screen is on so it's really snappy. That's using an app called SetCPU. By itself is enough for me. :)

Oh and the free wireless tether.
