Atrix 4G PenTile LCD????

is it really that bad????

I had a Droid 1 and an HTC Incredible. And I currently have an iPhone 4 and Samsung Captivate. The iPhone and Droid blew away the Incredible and Captivate in terms of crispness. Looking at the Incredible and Captivate is a little like looking at the screen through a small screen door. However, if you don't compare them side by side or haven't had a non pentile display, you probably won't even notice. That being said, I pre-ordered the Atrix and am hoping that the greater pixel density will lessen the effect. Also, I am looking at more than just the screen alone and taking into account the whole package.

Yeah, this has me extremely disappointed. I was hoping for better, especially since the specs advertise it as an 8-bit screen.

Why is it so hard to get the perfect android phone? 4 to 4.3" screen (SLCD or SAMOLED PLUS) with vanilla android and a dual core cortex A9 SoC?

Honestly what has me most interested now is the S2 with the sole intent of rooting it.

It is the same principle. RRB and GGB subpixels. Of course, I'm going to reserve judgment based on whether or not it negatively impacts my view of the screen (it did on the Nexus One), but that doesn't take away from the fact that at its heart it is an inferior technology rooted in cost savings. It just seems silly that they're willing to throw 1 GB of RAM in this thing but skimp on an otherwise technically impressive screen.

The other manufacturers are free to use these technologies. They just don't because a) they probably don't feel it would offer them a competitive advantage worth the cost and b) the cost and availability will be hurt for something like that SAMOLED+ because Samsung is going to prioritize their own products.

while it being the same principle is true, it won't look quite the same due to the higher pixel density on the Atrix. i'm hoping that with a higher pixel density that it'll be in between an LCD and AMOLED screen regarding the "screen door" effect. it other words, a little less noticeable

The screen is actually something that has been concerning me. From everything I have seen from it, it just doesn't look that good. I've also heard reports that the colors look washed out. I'll really need to hold it in my own hands though to make a good judgement on the thing.

I'm new to Android, and I understand that opinions are merely opinions, but how can CNET describe the screen as "almost as good as the iphone" while others "reviewers" seem to be tearing it down? Is it possible that there are some AT&T haters that refuse to accept that a great Android device is about to hit AT&T?

PenTile displays bother some people more than others. It is similar to the screen door effect that used to be a huge issue with LCD TV's. Some people see it and some people don't. That would account for the differing opinions. You will need to see the display for yourself to see if its a bother to you.

The reviews of the screen, few as they are, are giving me whiplash. Here, the guy says the display is "really stunning," which is nice to hear, but given that opinions are so mixed, it's probably best to take a proper look in person before buying the phone.

I almost wish I was less informed (as odd as that sounds). I'm afraid I will be scrutinizing the display for faults as opposed to looking at it for its quality. You're right though, I will have to see for myself.

There is so much disagreement as to whether this is an issue or not, I'm honestly going to have to wait and see one myself. Some people say it's "crystal clear" and others say they were "bothered by text rendering".

It seems they went back to the past to post this review (12/31/69).

Nice to see PenTile isn't an issue for everyone, but the amount of bloatware (especially bloatware that bugs you) and blur is troublesome.

I'm sure some people do actually see it more than others (who might not note ANY issue).

However, there's people that "see" it because they're aware that the tech can cause it. I'm not saying they're _not_ seeing it, but they're a little hypersensitive because they know.

It's like auditioning speakers: "Oh those are X type of tweeter tech/material, so I think I'm hearing a little Y attribute".

There's also a certain 'looking past it' vs. 'looking for it'. If you're totally satisfied with the overall package, _tiny_ niggling issues tend to get forgotten, but if you're intensely obsessed with that one detail, it'll probably bother you.

Not happy about the PenTile arrangement. It was one of the main things I hated about AMOLED and now they've brought it to LCDs too....

Will hold judgment until I get one in my hand, but hopeful this get solved later this year when a new Amoled factory is oped by Samsung & LG will be moving this year from TFT to amoled display manufacturing.

yep, i just found out they got rid of it for their S2 series.
not concerned about early benchmarks regarding Exynos/Tegra 2. i don't think the software/drivers is/are ready for the Exynos just yet because it's getting beat by the old Hummingbird chip and the Exynos is supposed to be 5x more powerful.

for me to jump on board with Samsung this go'round, they need to make the device a little shorter and i need to see some of the guys get serious about dev work regarding this device.

prob not getting the Atrix now for three main reasons, PenTile display, locked bootloader, and the higher pixel density will cause the Tegra 2 to work more, lowering it's performance.
Motorola has an amazing handset on their hands, too bad they ruined it with those points i mentioned.

But the Tegra 2, being dual core and all, should be able to handle the higher pixel density. I mean if it's a snapdragon, it would be a con but with a tegra 2, I don't think so.
