Root Best way to root for what i want

ok guys here if my question. I am pretty tech savy, however i do not care for all of the custom roms for android. they just don't interest me that much, what would you guys recommend the easiest way to root is? I have the new 2.2. EB whatever it is.

I just want it rooted so that i can add wifi hotspot to my phone for free. So far thats all i've cared about, the stock rom runs great for me.

I did try a one click root with clockwork, and my phone wouldnt boot up, not sure what i did wrong, usb debugging, and litterally only opened the program and let it run.

One click for sure. Did you get any kind of error message or just wouldnt boot? If it was me i would start from scratch and redownload one click and try again.
