Have any stores sold out of Xooms?

No, Xoom sellouts are not good news. Don't congratulate Moto for failing to understand the market or what Apple is bringing to the table. This thing needs to flop harder and faster than the 3Com Audrey or the Palm Foleo to teach the other hardware companies a lesson on pricing themselves out of the market. Beating or matching Apple on pricing while having an advantage in features & flexibility is the ONLY way Android as a tablet platform stands any kind of chance of making inroads against iOS.

I played with a Xoom extensively today and in no way, shape or form do I see the value proposition in it. It's NICE hardware (as is Honeycomb) but not revolutionary, nor do I see how it's THAT much better than a Viewsonic GTablet to cost over 2x as much. The Xoom as an overall package seemed extremely rushed to me. Some occasional pauses and hiccups with switching apps and navigating through photos and toggling some menus & widgets. Maybe it was just the one I used but sometimes the touchscreen was overly sensitive and other times it seemed to lag a bit. I also miss the hard buttons (or at least a Nook Color or Apple-style single home button). I wouldn't pay a penny above $550 or maybe $600 for the Xoom in its current configuration (esp with no microSD & no LTE at present), especially considering how ill-suited the Android ecosystem is for tablets right now. Hopefully firmware updates will be frequent and substantial. I cannot wait to see an iSuppli teardown to reveal whether or not Moto has a ginormous markup on this thing or if Apple truly is able to squeeze their suppliers and leverage huge economies of scale in a way other companies cannot.

At the very least, a Xoom flop will make Moto think twice before giving a middle finger to their fans in order to appears Big Red (ie no wi-fi version). If this pig is a hit, then it will only encourage higher prices and further tie-ups between all of the decent Android hardware makers and the carriers while discouraging innovation and reasonable pricing.

Imagine if the first Asus EEE PC netbook back in '07 had been sold exclusively with a 3G radio built-in through a single carrier. It would have been DOA and the entire netbook industry that otherwise was sparked overnight likely would never have occured. And if the iPad had launched last year with a single comparable SKU (the 32GB 3G model) through AT&T stores, it would've been at best a minor flop and we wouldn't even be going tablet-crazy right now. Same thing is in effect now with the Nook Color.

I'll go on a limb and say that the entire iPad and "iPad killer" craze has been fueled by "impulse" purchases at retail of the $499 16GB model. I know probably 15 or more people with iPads and at least a dozen of them are the 16GB wi-fi model (ie the "cheap" version). These things are a luxury, not a necessity, and folks are looking for the lowest possible point of entry to the tablet experience and not yet another monthly contract.

Look, I love Moto (since the days when I carried a MicroTAC) and Android (got a Droid 1 on launch day) but this has just been too much to handle lately. First the infatuation with Blur, then the locked bootloaders, then the overpriced Atrix docks, and now the Xoom debacle. Sanjay Jha is at best arrogant and clueless or, at worst, secretly intent to on undoing all of the progress Moto has made since November of 2009.

Sorry bub, 3 Best Buy's and 2 Verizon stores in DFW I went to were sold out. I am not sure if I want to buy one, I want to use one first. But the Xoom isn't flopping...

How can it flop? Per a VZW regional rep, the load-in to stores was low and even a friend at BB suggests their stores got no more than ten and the average was four. A few reasons for being cautious with launch is the microsd, Flash and 4G update process. They were all smart being low with the load-in volumes. VERY smart.

Even at $800, not hard to sell-out ;)

The motherload of sales will be the wifi-only version. I expect it to sell VERY well, but the iPad 2 will probably take a lot of it's thunder. None the less, it should still sell very well.

added: Assuming the wifi-only gets an early jump on the iPad 2 launch.

All of the Best Buy's and VZW's in my area are now sold out. It took until late this afternoon but it did happen. The store where my daughter works got 40 in and sold the last one yesterday. The Best Buy closest to my house got 40 ( most I have heard about from any store) and and sold the last one today. So it seems to be selling well at launch lets see how it does in the next few weeks.

I was at Verizon this evening and a Verizon rep was saying that they only have 2 Xooms left. I did not get one.

I was not going to get the Xoom because when I heard that it was a tablet with a 10" screen and weighting about 1.5lbs, I thought that it was too big and to heavy.

The Xoom in the Verizon store was right next to the iPad. The first thing I noticed was it was smaller than the iPad. When I picked it up it felt lighter than the iPad and it looked like it would fit in my purse.

It now looks like I will be getting the Xoom but I will wait until the I can buy one with the 4g upgrade already installed. Also, I like to see what the Galaxy Tab 8.9 has to offer.

I pre-ordered from Best Buy (but won't be able to pick mine up until late tonight), so I should have a unit waiting for me. But I'm curious if the Xoom was popular enough to sell out at any locations today. Has anyone heard of any stores selling out? If so, post the news here.

Walked to the first verizon store and got one in 10 min, why even try worsebuy? I am in nj.

Around where in NJ?

So you can just walk into a VZW store and walk out with an unopened box now, right? Regular retail style...?

I got one in Verizon store neat to Woodbridge mall (rt1) fri around lunch time. Unopened? Retail style? What the hell is this? Why would it be opened? I personally took all plastics out of it. What other packages available? Black colored, they also having all possible motorola made accessories for xoom too.

I mean you just walk out with the box as you would at another retail place (not a wireless carrier), as apposed to having the rep unbox it and trying to get you activated on the data plan, as when you buy/activate a new phone in-store.

You did answer my question though, so thank you :)

Sorry didn't know that someone need 18 month to pay $600 :) No offence, I just don't like this store and not sure about name part. They normally most expensive to be best to buy.

No offense taken. Not a need to take 18 months, but $800 (wifi only for me) + the 2 sets of Bose QC15's I also grabbed for the family trip next month that includes 17 hours of air travel is a bill I prefer to spread out a little and leave the $ liquid. Besides a free loan is a free loan.

Early adopters pay a premium, but there are always alternatives. Alternatives to your retailer choice and to the product you decide best suits your needs. I personally don't think the current asking price is out of line. Everyone seems to have forgotten what a $1200 laptop bought you 6 years ago, or that a Compaq desktop computer in the early 90's set you back $3k, and didn't even include a Pentium processor.

The sell out's are deceptive since they aren't selling out due to popularity but lack of shipments. I spoke to three different BB's (I live just south of DC so it's a big market) and all of them said they were only shipped enough to cover their pre-orders (which only were available three days prior to release). I didn't pre-order because I wanted to be able to use one before I made that jump. I have used a few and LOVE it, but BB has no idea when they'll get any more. No idea what kind of stock the Verizon store got but Costco each got a pallet (around 30) so the back stock is available. I just think BB was attempting to create the illusion of scarcity and make it look like a "sell out product"
