Oppenheimer says 1.2 million DROIDS sold by Motorola last quarter (Phone Arena News)

Motorola DROID sold 1.2 million units at the recent close of Q4. The above expectation for the Motorola DROID sales started with a quick Launch Weekend start of 100,000 units. Initially thought to close Q4 with about 950,000 sold, a late holiday surge allowed the DROID to cap over a million units. Along with healthy sales of the Cliq, Motorola has moved over 1.5 million Android units. Motorola, under Sanjay Jha, has really had a renaissance and is poised at the sharp end of the Android group, readying the next iteration in the Nexus series. With innovative phones like the Backflip, which incorporate a touch pad, expect more iconic phones from Motorola.

Good news for Motorola and Android in general. I know I've seen a lot more people interested in Android phones lately. Even my girlfriend (who really doesn't care about geeky tech products) wants to get one when her contract is up after playing with my Droid all the time.

It's a T-Mobile phone. I would say that's pretty good for not being a flagship Android phone and Motorola's first Android offering featuring Blur.

Not surprising...While walking around CES, all I saw where Droids and Iphones. Very few Blackberries or other phones (including Android). I was actually a bit shocked at how many people where using Droids...

I've used both operating systems.... iPhone OS wins. There will always be a market for Android, just like there will always be a market for Linux. However, it will take much work to make it more polished and intuitive than iPhone OS is today, let alone keep pace with Apple. There is just too much divergence in Android from the start. Google is trying to do too many things -- they should have stuck to "not being evil". Let's face it, if Apple were smart enough to bring iPhone to Verizon 18 months ago, the Motorola Droid never would have mattered. And further, if Google were smart they would have made the initial release for Nexus One on Verizon and not T-Mobile since Verizon has a huge base of loyal customers.

Both companies have made some serious marketing errors, but no matter how you slice it, unless customization and porn are your #1 uses for your mobile OS, iPhone OS is the better choice because it dominates in usability, software availability, and overall polish.

It's painfully obvious that you are an iPhone owner.

The iPhone dominates in usability? Yeah, maybe the mentally inept have a hard time mastering the Droid but anyone with half a brain should be able to manage just fine.

The iPhone dominates in overall polish? You're iPhone may be super smooth compared to a G1 and other first generation Android devices but compared to a Droid, Nexus 1, Incredible (and any other Android device coming out this year), Android's "polish" is just about on par with Apple's. The Apple OS may be a tad bit more polished in terms of its physics engine but all the "polish" in the world doesn't make up for all of the phone's other shortcomings. Don't get me wrong, the iPhone is an awesome device, but don't come in here pretending that the iPhone is in a whole different league than Android when it is NOT.

I'd like to see you make your iPhone home screen look like any of the Droids in that thread (with interactive widgets) and then we'll see how polished and smooth that iPhone OS is running.

You are correct in regard to the marketing mistakes made, and I'll give you that the iPhone OS is more polished, but that's because its been out way longer than Android and has gone through several major evolutions. If it weren't polished by now, it would no longer be on the market.

Android has been out for about 2 years. My guess is that by the end of this year, considering the hardware that will be powering the Android OS, it will be about as polished as the iPhone OS, then one more year to beat it.

Software? I can't think of any iPhone software, Jailbroken or not, that can do something that Android cannot, save Apple specific software like iTunes.

I try hard to not sound like a fanboy, but your post has nothing but biased fanboy written all over it. I DO like the iPhone tho.
