Help Why can't cricket/metro have great phones?

ZephG

Newbie
Is there some kind of limitation in their technology that prevents Cricket(or MetroPCS) from having phones like the HTC EVO or Galaxy S? I mean the best phone we have is the Optimus C! Why can't they come out with great high-end phones? Maybe if they did that, people wouldn't think of them as the bargain low end phone companies!

Because they do not have contracts. They can not offer the 2yr discount that the other companies offer, so the phones would cost $500-$600 and most of their customers would not pay that much for a phone. But you can buy an unlocked version of the better phones and just flash it.

What he said. Would you be willing to pay that much for a phone or willing to commit to a 2 year contractual agreement? That would completely defeat the purpose of the companies being "prepaid" phone carriers.

Thing is about flashing phones not sold by Metro is I heard they dont have full function aka no data, mms, and may even text. This may have changed since the last I looked into it tho.

Like i said thats what I read/heard back when I researched it (few months ago) as my wife wanted her LG chocolate on metro. Android is a diff breed tho so I dont see how Metro could stop it.

Check on here, I'm sure someone on the forums has done it lol

I've had numerous flashed phones on cricket. From a old Treo to a fully functioning BB Storm. A buddy has a fully functioning Evo on cricket as well. However I have read on other boards about a new program cricket will be rolling out that basically eliminates Flashed phones with a OTA update system. That's why I picked up the Ascend over the $300 flashed Evo. I do regret that decision though. Because the Evo is a beast.

yea but how can cricket or metro force a OTA update w/o having a app on the flashed phone???

Reason I say this is I dialed #228 a bit ago and it tried to 'program' my phone n failed lol.

I'd like to see the sales numbers for the Galaxy Indulge from Metro. Notice how they already have a $100 rebate on it, didn't take long. There aren't many people using prepaid carriers who would put up that much out of pocket for a phone, regardless of the fact that they would save money on the back end versus paying out a contract. Metro and Cricket are just targeting their demographic.

Metro can also do full flashing but, Only with select phones. I am pretty sure that covers most droids. They have signs offering it all over the place. LOL

You'd probably have to bring it in and pay for that service. Not completely sure though.

A guy I work with has a Verizon phone (iphone i do believe) and he had it flashed to Metro, all his sms mms gps, and wifi (internet..etc) are working great... it did cost him $80... This was in Largo, FL corp store

EDIT!

Ok... It was not the iphone... it was the HTC Incredible and was somewhere in Seminole, FL (he asked not to say where)

You have to have the right APN info for things like data to work properly when you flash to another carrier, that's why things may not work initially, and why it should work perfectly if the carrier does the flash.
