froyo 2.2 for virgin usa samsung intercept

Well, my partner and I both have VM Intercepts after getting tired of huge fees and contracts. I must say, overall, the service with Virgin Mobile has been tolerable... really no worse than other companies that charge a lot more, but never good.

Until last night. My partner has been having trouble with his phone for a month, because the volume down button has gone out (doesn't click or do anything.) Anyway, we were SUPPOSED to have a phone in the mail after a second phone call about the issue. Last night, his phone got the Froyo update, and STUPID ME said "update now."

The update failed halfway through (we were on the road, so a bit or a byte probably got lost on the Interstate). Now, I find that even if I could find the update.zip somewhere, I cannot update his phone without pushing the volume down button (you know, the one that doesn't work...)

His phone turns on, the Samsung screen loads, and it screams VIRGIN MOBILE (gosh, I HATE THAT!!!), then it sits there with the backlight on the screen, but the screen completely blank and randomly vibrates.

Anyway, called Virgin and they said they would send a new phone. I said "well, when is the one that was sent last week coming?" He said they didn't SEND ONE last week. Then, after me explaining everything 10 times, finally he said they were out of prepaid return envelopes, so they couldn't send me a phone yet.

WHAT? No one in the office is empowered to just go on the FedEx website and print some frigging return labels? SO - I said, "I'm tired of excuses, what is the solution?" He claimed it was not an excuse, and told me to call back later. I read him the dictionary definition of excuse (gosh, I love quick reference tools...) and eventually just had to hang up.

So - is there a way to fix this phone while I wait for Virgin to get envelopes? (I still don't understand why it would be such a mortal sin for these big companies to empower their customer service people to actually help the customer, but I guess I never will.)

Or - is my partner, who really needs his phone for work, now without a phone for a week (at least.)?

I don't know where she got her information. Seniority? I've noticed posts from people that have recently purchased their intercepts, that already have been updated. Meanwhile, I've had mine for 6 months now. I've received the notification text, but no update yet.
@VMUcare mentioned in a few tweets that the 5000 are completely random.

Keep calling until they bump it up to the next level of customer care. You'll eventually get someone that knows what they're talking about.

THIS IS BULLSH*T

Virgin Mobile never ceases to piss me off with bad customer service and support...

I called yesterday to see what the deal was and I ended up mindf*cking the agent, and made her tell me that it could take 1 month , 5 months, 6 months, before we get an update. She seriously told me that. Why they have uneducated people giving help on matters they don't know, I will never understand.
She also said it's based on seniority, so whoever joined virgin mobile first will get the update first. I really hope a manager goes over our conversation, I tried to talk to someone else she refused to transfer me, saying they were too busy.

VERY DISSAPOINTED VIRGIN MOBILE!

I also talked to someone who said their supervisor was busy in a meeting she would call me back, which she did, but no help... Thats bull I got my intercept back in Oct/Novmb and got the test last week saying it would update on 4/11... no update... I want them to send me the LG android and give me $100 back or something, because if I'm waiting 6months, I'm going to freak out even more on vm...

Oh - just as a follow-up, FYI we bought the phones in November of last year, but (yet again) VM messed up (they sent them by FedEx to our PO Box, not the physical address I've given them five times now), so we didn't get them until December. We both started with Virgin on the same day. We both upgraded to the Intercept the same day. We both live in the same house, so we are definately in the same region. We both have 303 area code numbers. In other words, you would be hard pressed to find two more identical cases. My partner's phone (the one that is now a vibrating brick) got the update last night, but I don't think he EVER got a text about the update. I got the text about the update last week, but I haven't gotten the update itself yet.

I have been lurking on this forum for a little while, being one of the people waiting desperately for this update. So I decided to register today so I could comment on this.

My experience with the Samsung Interecept is it's one of the biggest piece of crap phones I have ever owned. I was lured in with the enticement of having an Android phone with no contract and at a reasonable monthly charge. Well, that part is great and the phone's service isn't all that bad for what it is (working only on Sprint's network with no partner cell towers or roaming).

What really sucks is the performance of this phone with 2.1!!! It is SOOOO slow sometimes that it is basically unusable. In fact, I have literally lost calls because the call coming in was SOOO slow to respond so I could answer it and then the call app CRASHED when I tried answer!! And I use my cell phone for my business so this is extremely unacceptable. I have literally thrown the phone out of frustration and I am surprised it hasn't been permanently damaged yet. I also am surprised I haven't broke the touch screen yet trying to press something that wouldn't respond. I guess at least the phone is constructed well.

How in the world VM or Samsung could introduce a pile like this is beyond me. And then charge $250 for it!!! (luckily, I got mine and the wife's for $179 each on sale). Did they even do any beta testing on this phone before it was released???? I bet if some VM or Samsung exec had to use it they would have been appalled.

Anyway, back to the thread (my initial rant is over for now). I got the upgrade text April 8th and still no update yet. I bought the phone in December. I guess since someone posted that the updates are being rolled out randomly, I really won't know when I will get mine. I am just kind of desperate, as I want this phone to actually be usable and an enjoyable experience. I guess what makes it so bad is it's an Android phone and has so much potential. But I must admit, I have been tempted to buy the new LG Optimus for $150 just to have a phone that works consistently. It's just hard to justify that when I just spent close to $400 for the two Intercepts (wife and mine) in December and the point of going to VM was to reduce cell phone expenses.

Warning to those who have yet to receive the update. Make sure your notifications for apps are turned off. I got my update overnight last night and before I could install it a notification popped up that there were new wireless networks in range. I closed that and guess what? Update notification was gone too. Now it look like I have to wait for it to be available to everyone unless anyone has any bright ideas.

I did notice that after installing "quick settings" from the market, I can turn on the hotspot and I see it as "AndroidAP" from my mac. However, the UI for setting password etc are not there in the network settings area and the AP appears to be locked with a default or random password that I didn't choose.

It looks like it might be possible to do if we either know the default password or locate an app that sets the password directly instead of pointing at the built-in settings the way quick settings does.

Thanks for this information. I am going to check it out even though you said it doesn't work. I hope someone finds a solution...

I haven't gotten the update yet so I'm not entirely sure how it works, but I would try going to Settings> About Phone> System updates> Update Android and see if that does anything.

I think if I don't get the update by this week i'm switching to t-mobile...the customer service and phone quality is definitely worth the extra 10 a month..

Im sick of VM support being so useless.

10?? What plan is that? (or is it voice only?....)
I would switch to t-mobile in a heartbeat if I could get data for only $35 a month.

ColoradoMJ: try downloading the app called quicksettings from the market. you should be able to make the phone usable with that until you can get a replacement. i don't know if this can help but: if you or your partner purchased with amex, your warranty may have been extended by a year. ask amex to resolve.
