Does the Droid Eris have a plastic or glass screen?

I emailed HTC and this is their exact answer.

We understand the importance of having all the information on our phones. All of the screens that we use on our phones are TFT-LCD screens. A TFT-LCD screen is a LCD display that is surrounded by two thin glass pieces. Therefore, the Droid Eris has two glass screens, one on that you touch and the one that the LCD display sits on.

I hope this clears up any conflicting reports.

You should use a screen protector, even if it's glass, as glass can and will scratch. Look at your windshield - you'll see tons of little scratches and pits like grains of sand.

The best screen protector I have used, and do use, is Phantom Skinz. It has virtually no orange peel, feels virtually like there is no protector at all. Way better than Zagg - which is thick and has lots of orange peel effect.

It's definitely glass - tap on it with some metal and you'll hear the difference.

I can scratch mine with some keys and scissors and nothing happens. I'd say it's just as durable as an iPod touch screen - I have one and neither scratch in my tests.

I got four squiggley scratches on my screen from the rough edge of a credit card lying flat against the screen.

this is really interesting. another member at howard forums emailed HTC and was told that it was a hybrid glass/plastic screen but that plastic was on top. personally i am thrilled that it's possible the screen is glass, especially considering everyone i have talked to has pointed out one of the differences between the droid and eris is that the eris is plastic and the droid is glass. but it still leaves me wondering if in fact it's really glass on top. can't seem to get a consistent answer.

so i finally got an email back from HTC (had to send a follow-up because the first was never answered) about whether or not the screen is glass or plastic. i had sincerely thought i would either hear it was plastic or i would hear it was glass, and be able to add some sort of official word towards the matter. i didn't expect this at all:

"I understand wanting to know what the screen of the Eris is made of. Any materials, unless published in official materials from HTC, are considered proprietary. As such, these details are not released. I apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact us again. You can find additional support at our user forum www.htcwiki.com. There is also a customer satisfaction survey for you to take if you are interested."

i guess we will never know for sure.

A similarly tough but clearer, smoother and less tacky 'self healing' screen protector is the BodyGuardz shield. You might prefer that to the Zagg one, I know I do/did.

And Grimster, if why is it called a 'invisible shield' if it's not invisible??

Zagg makes two different shields. One that's made for the FRONT/SCREEN of the device and one for the body. ALthough both do have a slight 'eggshell' texture that the BodyGuardz doesn't have.

I dont think you understand the point....

Zagg shield is intended for the BODY of portable devices. Its a HORRIBLE product to use on the screen because, again, its NOT fully transparent, its thicker that silicon based protectors which can reduce screen touch sensitivity and on top of that its has a rubbery feel to it that grips your finger and prevents it from sliding around on the screen, its an adhesive GLUE based application which is why its so unclear.

The material has a rubbery feel to it because it was designed to cover the BODY of devices that are held in your hand so they wont slip out. This is the OPPOSITE of what you want on your screen.

Ive been using screen protectors for many years and this is by FAR the worse SCREEN protector out there. Dont get me wrong, Its a fantastic body protector just dont put that material on you screen.

Do NOT use the Zagg invisible shield on your screen! Its by far the WORST screen protector out there. The clarity is awful and the screen protector feels like rubber and grips your finger when sliding it around the screen.

Zagg invisible shield was designed for the BODY of devices not the screens. The material used is NOT fully transparent and its a GLUE based application.

Further more, your Eris does NOT need a body shield since its a matte finish you cant see scratches easily.

Silicon based non-adhesive screen protectors are the ONLY kind of screen protectors you should be buying.

I don't agree at all with your description of the Invisible Shield. I have it on (2) GPS devices, Nokia N800, and (3) cameras. It is not sticky and the clarity is excellent. I've tried others such as Boxwave, etc and Invisible Shield is by far the best screen protector.

I just ordered the Invisible Shield screen cover. If installed properly, there are no air bubbles whatsoever. I've had them on multiple devices. I've got one on my iPod Touch, and there is no change in touch sensitivity.

Same for me. I've always installed screen protectors on my phones/cameras and as long as you do it correctly there are no air bubbles. I can visibly see scratches on my screen protector that I know would have gotten on my screen so the 3 pack I got off ebay for 5 bucks was DEFINITELY worth it. Touch sensitivity was NOT affected WHATSOEVER. If you like having your possessions stay in nice condition, or plan on reselling the device later then I'd definitely recommend a screen protector.

Best Screen Protector is the one that comes with the Otterbox Commuter...It is precut to fit the eris, it goes on easy, no air bubbles, and is not noticable at all once on...In fact your finger actually slides BETTER with the protector on than on the naked glass. And it cleans up alot easier than the glass by itself...just a couple rubs with my tshirt and finger smudges are gone...

Granted, $35 for a screen protector only is not a good deal...but the case is great too..AND i found a holster that it fits in beautifully..at Walmart of all places..for 10 bucks...
