Root Wireless Tether and GB

I have a rooted X running Froyo... and I'm getting anxious to do something fun with my root access. Right now I am using Wireless Tether to power my WIFI ipad 2 ( please no haters...).

Am I correct in thinking that I read that GB somehow won't allow Wireless Tether to work? If this is so, GB is a no go for me.

Can you tether ( without paying Verizon) on GB?

Makes no difference if you are on FroYo or GB, (GB isn't officially out yet...) wireless tether is getting cracked down on due to the carriers' accountants realizing there was a market for something they were providing under the assumption that data was UNLIMITED, as it is termed in your contract. Somehow, they have figured out that if they threaten people with extra charges and termination of contract, they could get away with whatever they want to. Bottom line: either pay the extra for tether, stop using tether, or wait and see what happens when they figure out your usage. Personally, I don't tether, since I have a wireless router on my cable interwebz, funny how the carriers say absolutely ZERO about the relief of strain on their networks when we connect to Wi-Fi, but they sure bitch and holler when someone actually USES the data they were told was UNLIMITED.

Yes you can.

If you apply the TBH hack (here) and use the 3.0 wireless tether apk (here) and fiddle with some settings, you should be able to get it to work on gingerbread. I've been able to tether on every GB leak so far, up to and including .595.

sorry to step on a sore subject. I've been off the forums for a while and thought WT was a pretty widely accepted practice. I have wifi at my house and only use tethering when on a trip or something. Guess I'll have to look into my subscription options. Sucks that I pay $150 a month and can't use my data though. oh well. all good things come to an end

Im in the same boat, I use WIFI at my house and work.... When I was using WT,my monthly useage was .75-1.5gb a month....I refuse to pay them for a tethering package.....esp when i jump on wifi whenever possible.Funny I know ppl that arent rooted,using 10X the data I do,and I am going to get cracked on....maybe Ill leave wifi off in protest,watch my useage increase to 5-8 gb s month,but hey Im not tethering! Just take the load off my internet providers at home,and work,since they arent complaining when I use routers and multiple devices....

I don't understand people who were doing it before but stopped once the "crap hit the fan." P3droid told us absolutely nothing except some melodramatic story about VZW tracking us.

VZW will never charge us something we didn't agree to without giving us due warning. When ATT cracked down on tethering, they gave almost a month notice telling people to stop before they would be charged!

I understand that one way is that you can no longer directly download wireless tether through the market if you are on verizon.

Are they now implementing tracking somehow?

I skimmed through P3Droids post, and nothing but vague statements were made.

If your on twitter,around the time gb for the dx was released, there was non sto ranting in a panic to uninstall the TBH hack,and that verizon was tracking wt users....blah blah,blah....I still have WT,and anyone rooted thats done any reading knows you can grab the .apk online still....I will use wt only in an emergency.....until I know the crackdown is bogus or not happening..

Yet people will believe all those vague statements, kinda like those who beieve Nostradamus was a seer into the future and that the IRS is a part of the government.
Read your contract, understand your contract and do what you think is right.
If it ever comes to getting charged extra for something you thought you were already paying for, perhaps a class-action lawsuit is in your future. The only way to remove a tyrant from office is resistance, the only way to kill a monster is to starve it to death.

I wouldnt worry about it too much. I have been wt for over a yr. Hitting 15 to 30gb a month and they have never said a word about it.

WT worked fine on my phone until I did the GB. The Netflix still makes GB worth it tho. Any tips on how I can still use WT without it kicking me off 3G with I close it?

Are you using the yellow "experimental" tether apk? I linked to it above.

If you are, it turning on the DX mobile hotspot icon is perfectly normal.

Try this for configuring them:

Make sure you have the TBH patch and the WT with the yellow icon installed. I have them linked above.

Turn on the VZW "3g mobile hotspot" app that came with gingerbread.

Configure it. Set up your network SSID, your WPA2 password, etc. Turn that off.

Then turn on the yellow experiment wireless tether APK.

Set up all the same stuff through that.

I have it set with encryption on, the same SSID and passphrase, access control disabled. Everything else is the default settings.

Then you can just use the yellow wireless tether app to tether.

It gives you some strange message when you turn it off, but it works perfectly fine. That's what worked for me at least.

verizon has "been cracking down" on this for a while, but I still haven't heard of anyone getting a letter or any kind of notice.

I'm sure that day is coming, but it hasn't come yet.

(and as for you not knowing why people have an anti-WT stance... I can only speak for myself, but I'm all for WT... I just don't think you should try and justify/rationalize it. No two ways about it, it's stealing-- if you're okay with that, cool)

I'll have to try this, I could not get it to work on GB and I am on .595 now. I haven't needed to use WT at all but it would be good on case of an emergency.

you can turn on airplane mode then switch it back off. faster than rebooting

I'm not for or against WT, I just have issues with the fact that the carriers don't reciprocate with discounts when we use Wi-Fi, but threaten action when we use what we understood we were paying for.
