To Nexus S or not Nexus S

Hey guys,

Owning at the moment a Nokia 5800 XM I feel the need to finally upgrade and I'm going Android!

So far I've been looking at the Nexus S. I can find it for around 350 eur here in Europe (which is a fair price for a smartphone I reckon). However soon (like 2-3 weeks) for 500 eur I will be able to get the Galaxy S II.

The latter phone beats the Nexus S hands down hardware wise but then I'm not so sure if I want to be waiting for android updates. And also the 4.3 inch screen seems a bit too much. How do you current users of the Nexus S feel about the Nexus ? Do you think it still fills the bill at the moment or you really need a dual core phone ?
I would use the phone mostly for SIP calls, internet browsing, music playing to work and playing around with android widgets and maybe even do some android app-coding but not really for games or watching movies...

Cause by the end of the year, the next Nexus will probably come out with a dual core and most likely even before that, Android Ice cream will come out and the Nexus S gets it first (just wondering if it will run smoothly).

For what you're needs are you would be more than satisfied with the Nexus S. I would only suggest getting the GS2 if you play a lot of games or feel like you would benefit from dual core.

Yeah well I guess one never knows what's the taste of caviar until you had it once
But I guess I'm confident I won't be turning into a hardcore gamer. The GSII seems to be super smooth with browser scrolling and embedded Flash and also double the memory = better multitasking. It's really difficult to get a glimpse of which one is better until you try both for like 1 week but since that's impossible I guess the Nexus S will probably fit me until the end of the year when dual cores should be cheaper and better established (and better supported by the OS as well)

The GS2 is an awesome device. It just all depends on which one would better suit you. If I were in your situation i would get the GS2 but that's only because I play a ton of games. But for the average user that doesn't really need the hardware that it has the Nexus S would be my first reccomendation. Just because it has awesome hardware that performs just as well as dual core phones that have tegra 2 processors. And because it will always have the latest and greatest software.

If you're planing on developing applications for Android, the Nexus S is the way to go. It is the developer phone and is pur Anroid (no skins to bog the phone down). It seems that if the Nexus 3 comes out in December with dual cores and the works, you will be getting it. Remember that for most of the dual core phones, the OS is not fully optimized to use the cores independently. Gingerbread does us daul cores functionality better than Froyo.

The SGII is rocking 2.3 though.

I really fancy the SGII, it looks like a really awesome phone, but worries about updates put me off massively.

Yes, I implied that when I did the GB and Froyo comparison that GB uses both cores better than Froyo.

Yeah, Nexus S is good enough for your needs since multimedia playback isn't a big deal (like videos) which I'm going to assume the SGS II will be good at. Also, since the SGS II will be coming out with an NFC chip, it's probably going to have the latest Gingerbread so I wouldn't really worry about it until Ice Cream comes out.

Yep I might be getting my hands dirty with Android programming. Being an Software engineer with over >6 years experience in Java, I guess why not give it a try ? Seems like it's where the potluck of gold is at for the future. But that's just a maybe...

One of my work mates got a GSII... it just seems a bit too big. It is thin and fits my jeans pocket perfectly fine, however I didn't really use it that much but I think it's too big for 1 hand usage comfortably and sadly I'm not a guy with big hands.

Ice Cream is supposed to unify the tablet and phone experience, and certainly will make use of dual core, so the next Nexus must have dual core. I guess by then I could still sell my Nexus S for about 50% of the price I paid for it (as long as it's in good condition)

Very true, Nexus phones tend to keep there value quite well. The Nexus One still sells for around $300.

And if the rumors are true the next Nexus phone will be the quad core tegra 3. No matter what happens i will be getting it though. But i will be much happier with a Tegra 3.
