Root Rooting and warranties

If I root my Hero, I understand that it voids my warranty.

Is it possible, then, to restore the phone to how my network supplied it to me, if I need to return it for repair, without them knowing that it had previously been rooted?

Also... if I do root my phone and/ or upgrade Android on it, what happens to my paid-for applications? Does the Market automatically know which ones I've paid for and allow me to download them again?

Purchases are tied to your Google account, so provided you sign-in with the same details you can redownload paid apps without charge.
