Creating a theme

im planning on rooting my htc desire HD and then wanting to make my own theme, anyone know how hard this is? or is straight forward? i have never done anything like this before but im bored of my phone at the moment and want to change it all.
any help would be great.
im happy to keep my icons and things like that, just want to change the layout and give it a fresher look.

If you're talking about a system theme, I posted a tutorial here that I and a few others are improving over time.

Hi there, welcome to the Android forums. I moved your thread to the Android themes section since you would get better help here.

Ardchoille created a nice theme guide here, and he'll likely be updating it as he goes. You can find a lot of good information in it.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions you have, that's how we learn :)

Edit - Blah I am too slow!

thanks for that link, but WOW, it looks alot harder than i thought it might be, i've only had my htc desire HD for about 3 months, and i currently have android version 2.3.3 if that means anything to anyone. im a newbie when it comes to all this, but i just want to make my own theme. after reading all that in the link, i think i might have to leave it for the time being though :(

I know it looks daunting right now, but it does get easier as you go, trust me.

The thing about making system themes is most of the files you will be using for theming reside in core packages and those packages require special methods. It's not recommended to just copy and paste an edited framework-res.apk package while the phone is running.. I've been there, it wasn't pretty.

In the interim you can always use a home screen replacement app (aHome, Open Home, dxTop, Zeam, LauncherPro, ADW EX, GO Launcher, Panda Home, etc.) to personalize the home screens and dockbar. This is much easier than full theming and it's where I started. Search for Launcher in the android market and try some of those apps, some of them are awesome.

Check out the Android Themes forum to see what others are doing as far as theming. You may find that full system theming isn't what you want after all.
