Phone contacts to Gmail?

I've read over a ton of posts but either it doesn't match what my problem is or I don't understand how to fix it. So here's a little info:

One g-mail account linked and set to auto sync on my phone.
Samsung Galaxy S (Tmobile version Vibrant)
Android version 2.2

I have about 40 actual contacts on my phone, but all of them have been duplicated, so I have around 80. My gmail account has 8 contacts, only the ones that are "starred in android".

I would like to move all of my contacts to my gmail account so that I can clean up the list and merge all the info. I just can't seem to figure out how to do that. I tried turning off the auto sync and turning it back on, but that didn't work. I tried adding a star to another contact and syncing again but that didn't work either...

So in small easy to understand words and simple single line instructions, could someone please explain what I need to do?

THANK YOU!

You'd need to export the phone contacts. Not sure if all devices offer that stock so you may need an app if your device doesn't. Hit your contacts list, access the menu and see if you have any export/backup options. Once they're exported then import them into your Google account (may be easier on a computer for the import). I can't give you more specific instructions since I'm not familiar with your device.

ok, so that was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be...

Contacts > Menu > Import/Export > Export to SD card > (confirm)

Wait for it to export

Menu > SD card and phone storage > Unmount SD card

Remove SD card and move to adapter for the computer.

Log in to Gmail > Contacts > More Actions > Import > (find the file) > Import

Thanks!

This is the simplest way that I found to do it with my Samsung Galaxy S:

  1. From the main Contacts screen, (hit Menu,) then More, then Import/Export, then Export to SD card.
  2. Connect the phone to the PC and mount the phone's SD card as a removable drive.
  3. Open browser to GMail, select Contacts then Import. Select the file on the phone's SD card, then Import.

After they sync, delete the files of the SD card
