Which apps to install first on new phone?

Hey guys,

So i have my new phone on the way,Its a Samsung GT I5500 Galaxy Europa.

Now i was wondering which apps you guys would recommend downloading first?

Also i noticed there are Antivirus apps available for free for the Android,Are they really needed though and if so do they slow down the phone at all?

Hi thanks for replying,Yeah basicly just wanted an idea of what apps/games you guys think are a must have for any Android phone.

Ive got to hunt me down a Windows live messenger app so i can check my email on the go.

As for the AV app, not for sure about any others, but I downloaded AVG (Free) off the Market and I see no slow down at all. Don't know if I really need it but, got is just in case. I have only had my phone almost a week and am still learning.

My first app to download was 'Lookout" antivirus app. Others say you don't need it and that it doens't work as good as they say. My logic is this, cellphones are now more like computers and just like computers need firewalls and antivirus software, you should have it on your phone as well. (Its better then not having anything at all.) I do alot of personal stuff on my phone: banking, checking e-mails, personal contacts info., making reservations, buying stuff online, etc.

Just wanted to say it's cool you give both side of the argument for lookout and other AV.

I like to do the same, I don't use AV personally, but I understand people who do.

Lookout does a little bit more than AV. It also backs up your photos(and other stuff) and helps find your phone if it is lost or stolen. If it is on a network, you can go online to your account and activate the scream. That could be useful if your phone is stolen but might still be on the thief nearby.

I "thought" finding your phone would be a good idea... but I have no service at home, and WiFi only found it within half mile. To find it accurately it needs to be outdoors, you need to have left GPS on, you need a connection, and you need to have left "background sync" on. I have background sync on maybe 5 minutes a day... so my phone and my life are up for grabs if I lose it. I do not banking on my phone, I may shop, but I buy on a secure PC.

I'm taking back my recommendation anyway. I just found out that they changed from a free service to a paid service. $30/yr is pretty pricey when there are other free programs out there. I'm uninstalling. I put all of my pictures in Drop Box anyway. I'll find something else for finding it if I happen to lose it.

Call Confirm (7Bit) should be one of your first apps and perhaps CallTrack (asterdroid mobile) as well. You're allowed to set up multiple calendars for a particular google account so set up a new calendar called "Call Log" to log the calls to and avoid cluttering your main google calendar. GPS Status & Toolbox (Eclipsim) is another great app to have in case you have GPS issues (unable to get satellite lock) at some point.

^ This. If you really want blind recommendations there are countless "best apps" and similar threads that you can refer to. No need to reinvent the wheel for every single new user that asks this very same question.
