Review: Otterbox case (amazing!)

I scoured the internet looking for cases for the Droid Charge. I found the case that in my opinion is *the only* case to have for the charge:

Otterbox Commuter Series Case for Samsung Droid Charge (SCH-I510)

First it comes with a screen protector. I have to admit that it was hard to get this on without dust getting stuck to the self-adhesive side of the protector. And once the dust is on there, it appears to be impossible to get off. It would then create little visible air pockets under the protector. This was due to me having to re-position the protector a few times to get it lined up perfect.

** If this happens, do not peel off the final layer labeled "2" yet **.

I thought this little screen protector was now trash. I even called Otterbox and they said that they'd have to send me a new one (for no charge, not even shipping, as this is covered under the warranty -- they were also very helpful and easy to deal with). HOWEVER, I did find a way to get rid of the dust: Fill up your sink with warm and slightly soapy water. Fully submerge the protector under the water and scrub it with your fingers. Don't worry about getting the little sticker with the "2" on it wet, or anything. This will get all the dust off. Take it out, and rinse it under fresh faucet water. Now be careful to shake as much water off as possible, but keep it facing down towards the sink so that dust from the air doesn't float by and get stuck again. You'll end up with tiny droplets of water left on the adhesive side. Take a paper towel and twist it up so that you have a little pointy end. Take it and dab the remaining droplets of water to completely dry it. Now you're ready to apply it to your phone once again.

Next, it comes with a silicone or rubber piece that goes on next. It surrounds the phone leaving all the necessary cutouts for access to ports, microphones, etc. and is the layer that takes care of shock absorption. The headphone jack and USB port have little flaps so dust and crap won't get in there. This layer does cover up the volume rocker, power button, and the menu/home/back/search buttons. This is a great feature IMO, because it makes the buttons hard to hit accidentally yet doesn't interfere with normal usage.

The last piece is a hard plastic cover that goes on over the rubber. This provides hard impact protection in addition to the shock absorption. After both the rubber and the hard plastic pieces are on, what you're left with is a hybrid-plastic-rubber mix as the outer case layer. It feels great.

It looks more bulky than other cases, but let me assure you that it adds the *perfect* amount of bulk. The phone feels great sitting in my pocket, it's easy to put in my pants pocket and take it out, plus it makes the weight and balance of the phone just right.

Anyways, hope this helps some of you.

Just my two cents:
The case overall does what it is supposed to without being too bulky. I agree with that. It seems big at first, but it's easy to get used to it, especially considering the benefits of the protection. I am not a fan of how the rubber piece fits, though. It is kind of loose at the top, and it is easy to pull back there. Also, I don't know how much I like the buttons being covered at the bottom. This does seem to add more protection in the sense that it doesn't allow the phone to land flat on its glass face. Still, the rubber piece just feels cheaper in design and make than the ones for for other phones. Overall, I am happy with my Otterbox, but there is definitely room for improvement.

I agree with you. I ended up replacing my Otterbox with the Trident Aegis and it is really nice. The plastic outer shell connects on all 4 sides of the phone so it stays on really tight and the buttons are not covered. It is a little bit thicker then the Otterbox on the bottom because it has a curvier bottom. It has a nicer feel then the Otterbox and to me has a nicer look. My big complaint about the Commuter is how loose it is at the top.

Still.................................................................. waiting on the Otterbox Defender.

A tip for applying screen protectors. If there is a dust partical underneath, take a piece of scotch tape and apply on top of protector, nearest area where dust is , leave part of the tape hanging over the edge of protector to use as a pull-tab, to lift protector up without physically touching it.

Before doing above, wrap a piece of scotch tape around the tip of your finger, " STICKY-SIDE OUT".

Now lightly touch the area, screen and back of protector, with your taped finger-tip and dust should be removed.

Squeegee back down !

Wow, that Trident Aegis does look a little bit nicer with the plastic all around each side.

How much thicker is the bottom section? Does it still fit nicely in a pants pocket?

Oh, and thanks for the scotch tape tip! That seems a lot easier than what I had to do haha.

Just think of the natural curve on the phone. Its like that. Even though its a little bigger on the bottom it comes out of the pocket easier then the Otterbox due to the fact this not half silicone at the top and bottom catching every thing. The lip is not nearly as tall around the screen but it still provides great protection. The plastic provides a great grip in hand and is very smooth to the touch. I bought a cheap tpu case, the Otterbox Commuter, The Trident Aegis, an Incipio Feather and Double Cover and the 2 Incipio cases were crap and the Otterbox and Trident cases were good but the Aegis is the clear winner.

If you are looking for something like the Otterbox Defender, Trident looks like they will be shipping the Kracken II case for the Charge soon. It looks like a Hybrid between the Otterbox Defender and the Trident Aegis. It comes in the awesome colors as well.

Err.............looking for something that comes with a belt clip, which the Kracken apparently doesn't have !;)

Honestly when it comes to brute force there are alot out there but nothing compares to the Defender. Sure it turns your phone into a brick but if you do heavy duty work like myself (such as construction etc) nothing compares to the Otter Defender. I have had my phones drop off buildings and still be ok.

It's not the fanciest looking case out there for sure, but it gets the job done. And that's what matters to me the most. At the moment i have my Charge in a commuter with screen protector but i too have been waiting for the Defender to come out. Nothing else even comes close to true rugged duty as far as a case is concerned.

Edit: The Kraken 2 does have a belt clip now. Though it is made of plastic as to where the Defender is metal.

I picked up the Trident Aegis case for the Samsung Droid Charge, I own a Otterbox Defender for my Ipad and Iphone 3G so I can compare quality and style between the manufactures. I think in a true drop test, the Otterbox would hold up better, but with that comes bulk and weight to accomplish that feat. That being said, I am impressed with the quality and thin design of the Trident Aegis. It does add some bulk, but not to the same degree as the Otterbox. It feels pretty good in your hand and the four bottom buttons are exposed for ease of use, which is nice. I used my Steinheil Ultra Crystal Screen Protector with the Aegis no problem, so no review on the screen protector yet. As for the pocket-ability of the Aegis-clad Charge, fits well, only complaint is the silicon seems to pick up Pocket Lint too well and likes to hang on to the micro lint. Like other cases the typical cons, does not fit in desk charger/cradle, does not allow extended battery, or fit a typical holster. The Trident Kracken case may be a better venue for some when it releases because I believe it will have a holster of sorts. I am considering the Nite Ize Medium Vertical Holster, 4"x7"x1" because of my job aboard ships.

Hope this helps some make clear decisions... Waiting for the Kracken may be the best bet or waiting for the Defender to release, both should have holsters, if you need them.
