If you are planning to root, you might pass the tie by reading the tutorials in that folder--they are really good and helpful.

That totally depends on how many apps you need to put on your phone. I've only added 35 apps (40mb) and the majority of them are merely to customize the look of my phone. I have tons of space left.

You only need link2SD if you plan on putting more apps on the phone than the phone was meant to handle.

I really don't need link2SD, I have 77 apps on mine and still have 144 megs left. Running the Bobz version of IHO, and it seems to be very memory friendly. This is including a number of large apps in the 15-20 meg size range.

1. Install a custom recovery using this tutorial found here http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-...-custom-kernel-rom-change-boot-animation.html Then make a backup of your system in the recovery under "backup and restore"

2.Root you phone using the Gingerbreak.apk. A really good tutorial can be found here http://androidforums.com/optimus-v-all-things-root/380801-guide-rooting-without-computer.html

3.Install a custom Froyo based ROM or Gingerbread based ROM using the first tutorial mentioned above^.
Harmonia and Bumblebee are the best Froyo based ROM's that are still supported. Any IHO-CM7 ROM(Gingerbread ROM) will have most every thing working and will get updated(little problems fixed) regularly.

4.Try to figure out all the new things that a custom ROM can do.

5.Try to figure out all the neat apps that you can use now that your rooted

6.-10. Discover new ROM's and new friends here in this forum.

If you aren't necessarily going to root (I haven't though I'm thinking about it):

1. If you don't have a google account, get one. Import all your contacts into it from your previous phone (I did this with the clunky contact display on T-Mobile's web site, brought it into Excel, hundreds of contact #s didn't take long at all).
2. Start using google calendar, it syncs with your phone.
3. Get a google voice #. Get Gvoice App. If you talk a lot, get GrooveIP so you can make voip calls with Gvoice (and not use VM minutes).
4. Download APPBRAIN. It manages apps, shows you new/hot ones, great place to start off to see what's out there. Also you can block updates for certain apps (like the pre-installed ones you never use)
5. Get a custom launcher. I like Go Launcher EX, which is free.
6. Get a bigger SD card and move your music onto your phone.
7. If you drive much, get a car mount and charger. Bingo - in-car music, nav, entertainment system all ready to go. (I have a bike mount too, I use the maps and music all the time when I ride, I go off into the country without worrying how to find my way back)
8. If you camp or are otherwise away from electricity a lot, consider buying a couple of cheap batteries on ebay that you can swap out.
9. Rough on your phone? Buy a case.
10. Download a lot of really cool apps then when you start getting the memory full message, consider rooting

Lets see: So far I have activated(couldn't get the darn $25 plan so i'm pissed I waited so long), installed a ton of apps(twitter, facebook, weatherbugpro, yahoo im,act1 video player, chrome to phone, titanium backup, gmail, pulse, youtube, words with friends, angry birds of course(multiple ver)), otterbox commuter case, put my itunes music on a 16gb card and am using that as my main card,

I am a previous droid X owner so i'm not totally new to android.

Now I need to get some setting shortcuts so I can turn wifi, and other settings on/off.

Check out Quick Settings in the market. Lets you toggle almost your settings from a widget or from the app itself. Wifi, data, brightness, volume control, gps, airplane mode; there is more, I just can't remember them all.

I'm kind of the opposite I guess. The user manual (or online PDF file, which ever has the larger text) is normally the first thing I grab when I open a box. Suffering from PEBKAC sucks!

I'm right there with you. It took me 2-3 reads before I was satisfied I had enough knowledge of the phone and all It's capabilities.I still got it close at hand just in case I forget something(Me forget something? At my age I've already had the first sign of getting older for a few years).
