I Am So Confused!

I have been lurking on this forum since the rollout of the Photon. I was ready to pull the plug and retire my Hero for one yesterday but BB was out of stock until today's shipment. Despite lackluster sales, the positive feedback on this phone from the forum has been encouraging. Until today... Seems the 8/24 update may not have fixed the phone reboot issue. I hate to make the commitment to get the Photon with this known problem.

Is this isolated to a minority of owners, or in fact a widespread issue that should cause me to back off and live with my Hero longer?

Thank you in advance for any constuctive advice you can offer.

I've had the Photon for over a week now, and I'm loving it. Like you, I upgraded from my old Hero. The improvement is nothing short of amazing. I don't know if you rooted your Hero, but I never did, so the stock was really slow! Doing the same tasks on the Photon is a remarkable change, lightning fast.

I've never had the reboot problem (knock on wood I suppose), but it doesn't seem to affect everyone's handset from what I read. I did have the silent call issue, but haven't experienced this since the recent update. But, I'd have to say Motorola pushing out an update after the phone was on the market for less than a month is promising.

Obviously the choice is yours, and you have 30 days to make your decision if you pick one up.

Has the phone not been selling well? Are people waiting to check out the new Samsungs?

I've had the photon for 10 days more and honestly haven't had any of the issues I've read about in here. I upgraded from the evo and I have enjoyed the amazing battery life compared to the abysmal evo battery. I'm running completely stock and have only good things to say about this phone. Give yourself a few days with the photon and I'm sure you'll be hooked!

I have a Samsung Moment and am also due for an upgrade. The Photon will prob be it. I wouldn't get another Samsung phone if they were giving them away. They abandoned the Moment so fast and left us with all of the bugs. Thank God this web site helped me with rooting, and made the phone slightly bearable.
I am going to wait a little while longer though. I figure if the phone isn't selling that well it may come down even more in price, and I also want to make sure that most of the issues are cured with the update. It is first and foremost a phone, and dropping voice during calls is not acceptable.

My only issue is I am getting voicemails a day late, and my phone seems to ring over 10 times according to my friends, evo never did that, other then that its stellar. I do however wish gmail was a bit quicker, seems to lag couple of seconds when transitioning through gmails, minor complaint gaming is very solid, sound is awesome, reception is fantastic

I have no complaints with this phone. The issues you may have been reading about are far from universal. Do they affect some owners? Sure, and I don't mean to detract from the problems they are having. From what I've seen though, the great majority of Photon owners are happy and have minimal to no problems. Don't let some minor reports keep you from trying out an awesome phone. If you don't like it, that's what the 30 day return window is for. :)

I dont think the phone is going to come down lower than the 99 bucks. I have a reply a few threads down. I was able to get mine for 99 right from the sprint store and not thrue BB or RS.

The phone itself has been great. I am on my second because I was getting the power down and lock. So far this one has been perfect. I had the silent calls when I first got it but its been great since the update a few days ago. I would definately suggest this phone, and I am big HTC fan.

I have had the sleep/reboot issue. And at first it used to annoy the mess out of me.... until I realized the common pattern it did it in. I realized that every time it did it, it happened when it was either in a roaming zone for too long or underground where I couldn't get service. When it does so, it pushes extra juice to find a signal to the point where it starts to overheat. I think it shuts itself off as a fail safe to keep it from pushing itself more than it has to, thus requiring a battery pull to do so. I realized this about a week ago. Now when I know I'm going into a dead zone for a while, I put it in airplane mode. I haven't had a shut down since.

I have had mine for a week. I have not had any issues. It has only rebooted itself once and that was when turning off the screen while still having a Game running.

Other than that it has been great. I am not a fan of the 4.3" screen phones but I don't mind the size and I can really type fast on the landscape keyboard. I like the screen especially outdoors.

mph82, how did you get the Photon from a Sprint store for only $99? I can only trade in my Epic there so I want to know, please.

When you go into the store ask your agent if they can give you the photon for 99 bucks since BB and RS have it for that much as well. they dont have to, but they might.

Mine was a little different. I signed on in the first few days of august with a EVO4G... I was looking at the photon but didnt wanna drop the 199 bucks. So I have the EVO about a week before I saw the Radio shack ad for 99 dollars via Sprint... I took my evo into the store and the dude is like we cant match that.. so I am like alright. I walked out.. called the CS line and they said its up to each store... I then called the lady that I worked with inthe same store.. she said let me check as exchanges have to be made in the same store as you got the equipment. About 30 mins later she called back and told me I could get the photon for 99 bucks. SO I traded in my EVO for the photon for my wife and I... Just a mtter of checking.

Just ask when you go into the store if they will match it. They really have nothing to lose as they are locking you in for 2 more years. I am thinking more times than not they will match. It is just good customer service.

I've only seen the phone reboot a couple times in my entire time owning the phone (since launch on 7/31...and still on the same phone, having never replaced it). The times I noticed it happening were after I had my phone exposed to sunlight for extended periods of time while on my dashboard in my car (plugged into the car dock). I attributed that to overheating, but I've NEVER experienced what others have mentioned about continuous reboots. If that were happening to me, I already would've brought the phone in to exchange it.

After the update, the MoPho has been awesome for me. The only consistent issue I was having was resolved with the update (mute call issue), so I'm loving the MoPho way more than I did the EVO (and I really, really liked the EVO a lot).
