X2 Overheating Issue Resolved?

Frisco

=Luceat Lux Vestra=
Doing searches on "heat," "hot," and "overheating" I see that the last posts/threads on that issue ended in July.

I have a new X2 and have noticed it getting very warm below the battery compartment after a few minutes of uninterrupted use.

I'm wondering if X2 users are not complaining about it anymore because it's not linked to any other issues, such as reboots or screen freezes, etc (mine does none of that).

HEY FRISCO!! Haven't seen you since the Eris days.. hehe. If I'm not mistaken, GB resolved the heat issue. At least for me it did. I've been through 3 X2s since GB and none of them got unusually hot after alot of use. At least thats MY experience after having 3 of these.

I think the lingering issues are the music playback and a few people are still having some random reboots

Hello Hypo.. ah, yes the old Eris days keep coming up in the other device forums. ;) Those were the days.

I haven't been able to detect any other thing that seems out of the ordinary.. no reboots (only had it since yesterday around noon or so, about two hours of use since then, texting and using Dolphin HD browser).. the sound is great, calls sound nice and crisp, everything is fast as can be, etc.

It got the warmest as I was configuring ADW with icons, wallpaper and widgets. I have not used a temp gauge yet, but I'd guess it to be in the 90s because it is so warm to the touch.. not "hot," and it would be stretch to say it was uncomfortable, but it was noticeable enough for me to wonder.

The only time I notice it getting oddly warm is when I am constantly doing something on it like using the actual phone (yes, I use the phone as a phone occasionally) or playing a game while it is plugged in.

It may have something to do with the inside of the battery cover being metal. Might be a cooling mechanism for the processors. My Mac Book Pro is a metal laptop and they use the actual case up top above the numbers as a heat sink.

With the latest firmware upgrade (2.3.4), the heating issue has been all but eliminated. In fact, with this upgrade, the battery life has improved considerably, and as a result, cooled it down further. Although NiCad batteries suffer from a memory, and require periodic trickle charges, the heat dissipation is better. This is mainly due to the materials used to make the lithium polymer batteries of today. They pack so much potential energy is a tiny inadequately vented space, with no heatsync or fan. To mitigate this, the manufactorers optimize the crap out of the firmware, to run much more efficient, thus cooler.

The battery cover works as a heatsync only by chance. If it were, there would be further modifications to the cover to maximize surface area, thus spreading the heat over a larger area. Another thing that works toward heating your phone up, is the case all of buy to protect the phone.

Oh well, enough data dump. One good thing I will do is when I installed my car dock, I was cognizant of where the air vents are. By placing the phone in front of one of the vents, you've effectively created a fan for the phone. Good luck on the heating issue

I have had my X2 for about a month without issues. Bought the extended life battery about 3 weeks ago and intailly it worked fine. 3 days ago it started overheating and the battery drained down in minuetes. I returned the battery and had the same results with the new battery.
I put the factory battery back in and the device is still heating up and the battery continues to drain in a couple of hours from a full charge. I understand there is a new firmware upgrade 2.3.4. How do I do the upgrade?

Welcome to the forums.

I'd think back to whatever other changes I made to the device (apps, widgets, settings, et) besides the battery.

Make sure you are at least above 70% charged. Go to settings - About Phone - System updates. It should take it from there. For more info see here: Software Update: DROID X2 by Motorola - COMING SOON!
