Help Front view camera on Skype

Hi all

Had Skype installed on my Droid Charge.

How do I make front camera work with it? Can not find way to switch cameras at all. Pretty useless with rear camera.

Also, do I download Skype from Market, or from Skype? I did one from Market, and now my market looks completely different and pushing all kinds of junk I never will need.

Skype only supports front facing cameras on Gingerbread. The bottom line is that Gingerbread has a basic API built-in for accessing the front facing camera which wasn't available in Froyo. From a developer standpoint, you can utilize the front facing camera in earlier Android versions, however you need to code for the proprietary methods used by the manufacturer for each and every phone you want to support. Oovoo works with the Charge. If you want to use Skype, you'll need to wait for the official Gingerbread release.

ok. thank you. I'll uninstall Skype then, it's basically useless without front camera to me. have no doubt they'll catch with new phones with front cameras soon.

I was also frustrated by not being able to switch cameras, but I've found the video to be high quality, and look forward to the release of the version which will fully leverage the capability of my Charge. In fact, being able to use the "back" camera was very useful while trying to show my son some yard sale stuff I thought he might be interested in. It saved us some money! I hope the new version offers the option to switch between the front and back cameras, and not just assume we only want to use the front camera. ??? Any idea when the new release is due?

If you're waiting on front facing camera integration in Skype, it basically hinges on us getting gingerbread. They're not gonna add specific supporr for our phone with froyo.

Skype does in fact work with the front facing camera on the Charge, I just used it. I am totally stock 2.2

Hmmm... maybe they did a release we hadn't heard of? I'll have to try it (again) because it didn't work when I first got my Charge.

skype updated their app - so make sure you have the most recent version updated from the market

I just tried it and it works perfectly. Real clear, and bright.

i get better sound quality with tango but does drain battery. I like tango because you can use it in portrait mode.

Funny thing is, the Market description for this still shows that with Froyo there is no front view camera, but I confirmed it DOES work. Well, sorta. The quality of sound was so bad that I tried 5 times to have a video conversation and the lag and voice sound was so terrible we gave up. At the time I was connected to my WIFI at home, so connection speed should have been as good as it gets for me.

Disappointed.

That may of been an issue with Skype and not the platform. I was using my computer for a skype call yesterday and the quality went to s*^%$# about halfway through the call. Lost the video and sound quality.

So, is the front camera working with Skype now, or still not? I hate installing s/w that does not work and needs to be deleted later, cluttering the phone.

works fine. Rear cam gives much better pic quality, but still. very cool.
