Root Download.apk 6.6MB file - What is it?

I just got my son's gently used Droid X, and we rooted it and installed the Droid 2 Bootstrap Recovery. All is well. But at some point since that time I somehow acquired a 6.6MB file in the SD card's download folder. It is named "download.apk". I don't know what this is, or whether I need to hang onto it. Can someone shed some light on it for me? I have downloaded and installed some market apps. But I don't recognize that file.

If it's in your download folder chances are it's nothing important. It's probably an app to download videos/music or a download manager app. You could install it and see what it is if you wanted.

Thanks. When I tried Googling it, those words are so common the hits were drowned in general dialog about downloading and APK files. But I did find out an APK is actually a compressed archive, just like a zip file would be, so utilities like WinRAR and 7Zip can look inside them. I'm going to copy it to my PC and go exploring in it before I nuke it.

Among lots of XML files, there are some png graphics stored in folders named "drawable-160dpi" and 'drawable-240dpi". They contain a lot of what I would call "component graphics" for the Droid X's Android display. My son already did have Gingerbread, but I did get an OTA update right before we rooted it, and some of the graphics did change (such as the text selection cursor changing from concentric red circles to a blue arrowhead - which I like better). So maybe this was part of that OTA update. Come to think of it, I do believe it was close to this 6.6MB in size too when I downloaded it.

I presume all these things got installed and even if it is part of that update I no longer need it, right?

my general rule of thumb is that if it's one the SD card its safe to delete. your not going to brick your phone, worst thing is you'll lose some data(depending on the folder your deleting/deleting from) but nothing crucial to the phone running.

Sounds like pretty safe advice to me. I'll save the copy I made to my PC for a bit and delete the one on the SD card. Thanks.
