VT!
Hello,

I'm trying to get my head around how it would work if I went data only through VZW (waiting for N1) with my Google Voice account. I've seen how it to dial out and get a voicemail but I haven't seen any demos on how it works to receive a call. I saw on the info on the Droid that you can get unlimited data for $49.99/mo. Do you get assigned a cell number anyway but with no actual minutes? Also, my husband and I will both have phones and currently we have our GV number forwarding to both of our phones but I might use an invite to set him up with a second number so that I could get txts from folks that he wouldn't care to receive them from. Is any of this feasible? Is there a link that explains all of it further in terms of how it would actually work or any explanation would be super helpful. From what I've read, phone data usage is truly unlimited. Though I'm confused about the whole tethering vs broadband acct 5gb limit.

Last question, any speculation on whether we'll be able to use our new every two upgrades with the N1 or is it just too soon to know?

Thanks so much in advance!

All the best,
Rachel

I was talking to a Verizon manager the other day and she told me that the Nexus One is more than likely going to be locked to Verizon and sold at the Verizon stores, but it may be 2-6 weeks after it launches.

Google Voice doesn't do phone calls over data. It places a call to a Google switchboard that connects you to the number you want to call... doing that it shows up as coming from your Google Voice number. The same for receiving a call, it just comes through as a regular call, not data.

Can you do a SIP call through N1? Then I could use my GV account to place a call via my VOIP account. Feasible?

Can someone confirm something for me?

I am a long time GV user with a dumbphone. I just got a Droid and set it up to make all calls and send all txt messages from GV.

I know that the calls are not VOIP, but are my txt messages being sent through VZW (thus coming from my TXT plan), or are they being sent via my 3G connection through the GV App?

i remember reading something a while back about how you could "stick it to the man" using google voice.

you have to have at least a 1400 minute plan and have google voice. you then place your google voice number on your list top 10 list and since it will no longer count against your minutes, you sort of get unlimited talk time without paying for it. i know its cheesy, but dont shoot the messenger.

now.....

didnt google just create a web application for google voice so it would work on the iphone? i am still waiting for my google voice invite, so i dont know, but could the OP do what he wants to do this way? ultimately, i dont think verizon would let you do this. i mean if they can require you to have certain plans on certain phones, contract or no, i just dont see them letting you walk out of their store on paying thirty dollars a month for data.

There has been a web app for all phones for GV, Google created a native voice app, but apple overlord rejected it as usual
