The Story (briefly)

I GOT ONE!
It CAN be done…for now, anyway…
$249.99 (apparently there is a sale on 4G phones…)
I got it from a NON-corporate store. I got there shortly after open (9am) and was the only person in the store. There was one sales associate. A very helpful individual. Chatty and eager to help, but seemed clumsy like a recent hire. The associate mentioned just coming back from some off-site training that took several days. As soon as I walked in the door, s/he asked if I was the person that had the Nexus reserved. I said Yes, of course, and was poised for the killing blow. Remarkably, s/he walked to the back room and grabbed a small white box with a post-it note on it. It was a GNex! Instead of telling me it wasn’t available yet, s/he opened up the box and started scanning! This was actually gonna happen!

And then, a snag.
And yet another.
And another.

I don’t know what all the problems were, but the associate had to make like four phone calls to get the system to accept the phone and SIM. After the system accepted everything, we booted the phone and inititalized everything. I verified voice, voicemail, and data. Then when the associate tried to ring it up, the system wouldn’t accept payment!
At this point, we’ve been at it for an hour and a half and there are four other customers behind me complaining.

The associate finally rings me up manually (or so I assume, based on the mumbling…) and then I RAN!

So the corporate decision not to release HAS to be due to Wallet. Verizon knows they can't legally block it, AND Google controls the OTAs AFAIK. So whenever Google decides enough is enough, Verizon can't do anything about it (other than brick every phone on the network). THe press release Verizon put out said they were still in negotiations... I think Verizon is still trying to get a revenue sharing agreement out of Google for Wallet, and they are holding the release until they get something (Because in reality, the release is the ONLY leverage they have, once its out, its Google's). JMHO.

Google Wallet is not on any other Nexus device other than the Sprint Nexus S 4G.

-It is not on the GSM Unlocked Nexus S. You cannot put it on there without hacking it.

-It is not on any of the other carrier versions of the Nexus S. You cannot put it on there without hacking it.

-It is not on the GSM Unlocked Galaxy Nexus. You cannot put it on there without hacking it.

-It is not available on any other device OTHER than the Sprint Nexus S 4G.

Verizon isn't blocking anything. Google has some sort of deal with Sprint that we don't know or don't understand. Google Wallet is NOT a part of the AOSP.

Google Wallet is not the cause of any type of delay.

Yeah the new store is nice. Im home a couple times a year and always for one reason or another stop in a browse a bit...I guess some folks browse car dealerships, and I browse cell phone stores. Go figure:)

Yeah I bought my thunderbolt from there, but that was because my Dinc went through the wash over the weekend and I needed a phone ASAP. I like the service at the Pooler store better though, and its 2 miles from work, so I can stop off there at lunch pretty easily.

So anyways, back from my little lunch trip. I stopped by my Verizon store, and while I was waiting for a rep, I checked out the Rezound. Not bad, the screen looked beautiful of course. Then the rep came by, I told him I was interested in the Galaxy Nexus. No deer between the headlight looks, no clamming up, just sorry, it was supposed to release today, but got pushed back. I asked to take a look, and he said let me check in the back for one, and came back out. Man is it a sexy phone. The Rezound has nothing on it IMO from a feel standpoint, and the screen is gorgeous. and its so thin. Anyways, he said he didn't know a date, so I told him the forum I am on is thinking the 15th, and he smiled and nodded and said yeah I can't give out dates yet, but you should probably plan on stopping by on whatever day you think it is... haha.

And of course, I get back and see I missed a ton of news and excitement, and then dismay. Sorry OTD and Cincy! So close.

I am demoing a Rezound and have to say it's a REALLY nice phone. I was starting to get worried that I put the Nexus on such high regard that I would be disappointed when I finally got it. I'm glad to hear that you think the Rezound is nice...but I'm even happier to hear that you think the Nexus is better than the Rezound...sweet...can't wait!

OK here's the skinny...

I went to buy the phone thinking there's no way I'm walking out of this store with it. The activation went through just fine but they couldn't ring up the sku.

So they hand wrote a purchase agreement and copied my credit card (they were assuming they could run it later today when the sku was active) they never got word from their boss stating anything different from the 9th as being the launch date.

When I got home and pulled the phone out of the box I seen they called & texted, they were frantically trying to reach me of course I knew it was it was all about.
I consider these people friends and wouldn't want to see them fired. I am unemployed right now and I realize how tough it is out there.

but here is the good news...When I called Verizon to make certain that my upgrade eligabity was reset, I explained to the rep what happened. The Verizon rep was very forthcoming and told me that Verizon has not deleted the Nexus from their info guide but only hidden it, she says the release date is there and it's the 15th. I asked how she knew this and she said she really wants the Nexus so she went digging and found it, of course we all know that could change, but I don't doubt the rep for 1 second (and I usually doubt everything) that the 15th is the target date.

I'm SORRY and know I'm not going to score points here with this one ............... but if any of us had been through that there would be pictures. If not just the box there would be pictures.

After all the BS we have waded through to not post pics is, well.........

Well, here's a bit of unrelated news to brighten up your guys' collective days :)

Motorola Wins Europe-Wide Sales Ban Against iOS Devices

While I want to give this a fist pump.

I actually won't because I would prefer not to see anyone's devices banned anywhere.

The patent system is absolutely ridiculous as it currently stands.

Edit: Did you catch Apples "suggestions" to Samsung on how to avoid design infringement? They were basically 1) Make it not rectangular with rounded corners (how the heck can you attempt to patent a rectangular design, are there not infinite prior works examples of this?) 2) Offset the screen 3) You can choose no bezel or a huge bezel 4) "Lots of Visible Adornment" aka Make it hideous 5) Those horizontal speaker holes .... gotta change those! 6) Make it thicker

yeah, ordered the grey. Didn't really know how champagne would look in real life. At least I didn't get a cancellation.

I got the cancellation from AMAZON and then went to Best Buy and they put it through and everything. Have a receipt, payment was accepted, which I thought was weird, but it says shipping between something like the 13th through the 18th (I don't have the receipt in front of me), so hopefully it will be mine soon enough. It has potential to be a very geek-y Christmas.

100%. Its not only Google that has leverage on the Wallet issue. The FCC lease agreement for C-Block airspace included net neutrality clauses that prevent the leaseholder [VZW in this case] from restricting services.

"The FCC added terms to the auction that were meant to prevent winners from "denying, limiting, or restricing the ability of their customers to use the devices and applications of their choice." Free Press attorney Matt Wood said, "We think this could very well be a violation of the C-block conditions. When you have a powerful network operator, it can wield a lot of influence. But Google Wallet should be allowed to compete with Verizon."

As I posted days ago, VZW may be a victim of its own hubris in this case. They tried to strong-arm Google on the inclusion of a standard ICS feature, and ran foul of both Google and the FCC in the process. Its highly likely that they need the additional time to unfuch this mess, and release the Nexus with Wallet. I suspect they are negotiating terms for revenue sharing with Google as we speak, and doing so from a fairly weak position. Such a shame, eh?
