Personally I think the new Windows 7 Mobile setup looks pretty crappy. Now don't get me wrong, it's leagues ahead of the crap they called Windows Mobile, but I still think iPhone OS and Android are MUCH better. So I definitely don't have any immediate or long-term plans to switch to a Windows 7 Mobile phone. But yeah, I agree it's a douchey thing to do. Question... is this likely to have any adverse affects on our Droids? Would Motorola's focus of the Windows 7 OS mean that our Droid's features will get neglected? Or, rather, are our features based on Google's progress on the Android OS, instead of Motorola's actions?

It doesn't have to be one or the other. They can have phones with both OSs. I don't see the big deal here. In the end, the market will speak and if it speaks loud enough, Moto would have no choice but to listen.

Actually, I like the WinPho7 OS better than the iPhone or Android. IMO, Android's tile approach is a rip-off of the iPhone OS. What I appreciate about WinPho7 is that it looks so tightly integrated. It's different which is precisely why I'm not digging Android. Because the more the engineers work on "polish" for the Android OS, the closer it resembles the iPhone. For a company that touts "cloud" so much, must suck that WinPho7 OS is the first to actually integrate seamless cloud access to it's native apps (i.e. photos). I'm actually rooting for WinPho7 since for once, in a long time, MS is the underdog.

I think that our DROID support has a lot to do with VZW support behind the device. I think that after two years, the DROID will be wallowing in the middle of nowhere. I think Jha is really speaking out of frustrations of their collaboration with Google. I think that they may have felt gipped for not being the Google phone maker. But that all can change if Moto is behind the N2 and it's a winner. Who knows?

The way Google is setting things up, they're killing themselves. The fragmentation of the Android market is unreal. The development is happening so fast that they're likely to discourage future Android adopters as they wait for the next best Android phone every two months. In the meantime, Apple and MS will look a HECK OF A LOT more stable as a platform. Google better fix whatever's wrong with them. It seems like they're just quick releasing products without any thought: N1, Desire, Buzz, Shopper, etc.

What are you talking about Android is a copy of iPhone's OS? Android 's OS is fully custemizable unlike windows or iPhone. You can make your homescreen look like anything you want. I hate when people say it looks like iPhones.

Show me where he says Motorola is abandoning Android. I don't have a WSJ account to read the full article and could only read the excerpts, and in those he doesn't say they're dumping android like the headline implies.

The guy is trying to make money by making phones. He'd be stupid to ignore Winmo. As much as we love Android, it's not for everyone, and if MS can fix their mess of a phone OS, why should Moto ignore that market?

It's like calling the hotdog guy a douche because he sells hotdogs AND brats. If he was only selling hotdogs, and a fellow walks up and asks for a brat, he has to turn away that profit.

Maybe we should call Ford a bunch of douches because they sell cars and trucks - how dumb are they??!!! GM and Chrysler make fine trucks, why would Ford want in on selling trucks? Those crazy douche bags!!!

I just got a little annoyed with all this unnecessary piling-on of Motorola, and was trying to stick up for them. I'm no Moto employee, in fact, I thought I was going to hate this thing called Droid because it was so square and didn't have SenseUI, and I've been nothing but impressed from day 1. This isn't all Moto's credit... rooting and Pete make a world of difference.

Full Disclosure: I'm no economics expert, but could tell you that a good economics book cured my insomnia!!!!

Really, Moto is wishing they could make their own OS...and people are surprised? They want to control as much of their devices as they can...that's not a crime.

Moto is the reason that everyone walks around with a smartphone! Prior to the Q (which by most standard sucks today), only business people had a smart phone with data plan. The Q revolutionized the smart phone market. Where would Android be if Motorola didn't bring smartphones to the masses?

Let's not forget the Palm Treo lineup that absolutely blew! Let's not all go crazy on Motorola is all I'm saying. They have never had a Smartphone OS of their own and I'm sure they wish they had one. Wouldn't you want your own OS if you ran Motorola?

And for Android being a rip off of Apple's OS...really? I don't see it.

Franky, I think they're quite pleased with the Droid and are fine they didn't make "the Google phone". Look at how many were sold. The Droid saved Motorola. HTC didn't need saving, but if they had, the N1 wouldn't have done it. The way the N1 is sold means fewer units moved, as I'm sure Google and HTC are aware.

The way Google is setting things up, they're killing themselves. The fragmentation of the Android market is unreal. The development is happening so fast that they're likely to discourage future Android adopters as they wait for the next best Android phone every two months. In the meantime, Apple and MS will look a HECK OF A LOT more stable as a platform. Google better fix whatever's wrong with them. I don't get the complaints about the Market being fragmented. Until recently my wife had an Eris, and I had a Droid. Those could not be two more different implementations of Android (2.0.1 stock, and 1.5 Sense UI). I rarely ever found an app that ran on one and not the other. One notable exception being Trism, which I really wanted on the Droid. I've talked to Android developers about this before. Most of them said it was annoying, but not unworkable. They don't really like providing for multiple Android versions, but it isn't killing them.

You can say that the feature set is fragmented, and that would be correct. All the manufacturers have to make these updates for the devices, and some cannot be bothered. I think that in the future we'll see that if you want real uniformity and fast updates, you'll have to buy a phone from google.com/phone.

Oh yeah, Android is a rip off of the iPhone OS, NOBODY ever used tiles before apple with the iPhone. The iPhone OS DEFINITELY wasn't inspired by earlier computer OS's such as WINDOWS. For once the underdog? Windows phones have consistently been the underdog, and for a reason, the mobile OS simply put, sucked. Now I think the Windows 7 Mobile OS looks a lot better than earlier Windows Mobile, but I still don't like it personally.

Windows Mobile phones are likely to come out at the same rate as Android devices. The only reason why this is not the case with the iPhone OS is because there's only one company creating handsets under the iPhone OS. The argument that because many devices will be running Android, developers will be discouraged to make Android apps is ridiculous. You really think developer's are jumping at the chance to make apps for the closed iPhone OS that is limited to AT&T users when they can make apps that people under most carriers will be able to purchase?

What phone manufacturer out there has said "We absolutely will not make a Winmo phone and we are all 100% android"?!? None..

That definitely sounds like he's abandoning Android, him being "open" to Windows 7 Mobile. Any company that wants to stay afloat in a changing market needs diversity.
