[International / GSM] Help rooting

Need a little help here. I have been trying to root for a couple days following a few different write ups but I cant get the su to push to the phone. I open the cmd and it will recognize my phone. Im running xp pro and it will not let me open a cmd from the tools window. I dont know if that is the problem or not. The error I get is "cannot stat `su.zip` :no such file or directory". I was successful in unlocking it but I cant get root and dont know what I am doing wrong.

OK, first question.

Are you running your command scripts from you ".....android-sdk\platform-tools\ folder?

If yes then great. Next, do you have the SU files located in the same folder as ADB and Fastboot?

Last, make sure you are getting the commands perfect.... correct spelling, spaces, etc....
Yes and Yes. As far as spelling I just copy and paste what I see in the instructions on droid-life.
Wait, what exactly do you mean by "Are you running your command scripts from you ".....android-sdk\platform-tools\ folder" I open up cmd from start-run.

You have to run the commands within the folder that contains them, IE..... on my PC the ADB and Fastboot commands are

C:\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools

so in order for me to run the commands, the first thing I do is a Change Directory (CD) to that folder

CD C:\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools\

That puts you in the proper directory.

If you are simply hitting Start>Run then typing "cmd" then you are starting in the Windows Default Folder(directory)

ok since I have it rooted and CWM installed would I be better off just flashing CWM when I need it. I have been reading that updates will not work unless you have the stock recovery. Is my thinking correct?

You'll probably have a good few days lead-time / heads-up when an OTA is available, so you'll be able to re-flash the stock recovery image well-ahead of time.

I'm going to flash back to 4.0.1 stock and flash CWM to see how/if that affects receiving the 4.0.2 OTA (I'll also see how installing root affects this, too).

I'll report back when after I've done this.

Cheers!

Yes, you need a stock recovery to install an OTA.

The good news is that you can have a custom recovery when the OTA comes in, and then re-flash the stock recovery to install the OTA.

Here's my research from last night:

If you don't mind me asking what was it that you did to get it to work?

I have never used cmd, adb or any of the manual methods to root before so that is all new to me. The first problem, I was not in the right directory. I figured that was the case but didn't know how to change. Then I figured out I was putting the unzipped su in the tools file. After I got the right directory I figured it out. Always learning and it helps to have a great community like this that are willing to help.
