Peculiar behavior when receiving SMS

Hi everyone. I do have a rather peculiar issue with SMS I receive. I upgraded from an HTC Desire to an HTC Sensation XE a couple of days ago and I noticed that after moving my contacts etc to the new phone, a peculiar issue arose when receiving SMS.

Admitedly I have only received SMS from one person (as I have the phone for a short while and I am not a heavy texter) but it perplexes me. Anyway, here it goes. Despite me having this person in my contacts, whenever I send or receive a text from this person I can only see their telephone number and not their name as I should be doing. I have linked the contact in my phone with their facebook profile, but I do not think this is the problem as I never had any problems with my HTC desire before.

I am on O2 in the UK, and when visiting a 'guru' at the O2 store I got them to test whether this problem happens with everyone or just this person. After saving the 'guru's' number on my phone, they gave me an unanswered call and a text, and I was able to see the name under which I saved them. Any idea what might be going on? How did you move your contacts to the new phone? It is my understanding that only Google contacts will display contact information. Phone and sim contacts will only display the number.

I synchronised them using 'my phone explorer' from my PC. I had no problem with contacts showing name and picture in my HTC Desire before, and as I said I cannot comment if this is a general problem or it happens only with this contact, as this person is the only one I had SMS communication with since upgrading...

Open your contacts app and see if that particular contact is listed as a Google contact or a phone contact. Another way to check is to look at the contacts list in the gmail account that the phone is registered to. If that contact is not listed, then it only exists on your phone.

Thanks for your answer, but this is definitely not the issue. None of my contacts is a google contact. They all are phone contacts with some of them linked to facebook. I just received an sms from one of my other contacts (also linked in facebook) and I could see their name and picture rather than just their number. This is indeed very weird...

Have you tried clearing cache and data in both your Facebook and Contacts app? That can often fix buggy issues with apps.

I sometimes get this problem on my blackberry.

its due to different networks sending the country code or not sending the country code.

if you save Bill as 12345678 and his incoming number is +40 12345678 (country code + number) then it didn't relate the contact to the number. best bet is to delete the contact, and go into the sms and save the contact from there and see if that helps.

Thanks. I have tried all that, to no avail! I have even done a system restore in my phone and my wife's (she is the one I get the number and not the name and info in messages) but no luck. The funny thing is I get her name and picture when I call her or I receive a call from her, but when I send or receive messages from her it is just the number. Really weird...

Hmm strange, don't think i can help you sorry. I also saw it once before, it was due to encryption running on the phone, encryption had to be disabled on the contacts folder to show the contact name correctly, but I don't think that is your issue.

It might be time to try a 3-rd party ROM.

Thanks. I know, it is a very tricky one. I am close to despair, as ALL other contacts show Ok on my phone, and my wife's number and name appear Ok on other friends when she texts them. So it is only happening to my phone and ONLY when she texts. Weird...

actually, one thing springs to mind, didn't happen to me on a phone, happened when I was working on a database a while ago and drove me crazy till I figured it out. I had two records with the same number, so it might be worth exporting your contacts to a spreadsheet somehow (through google maybe) and searching for her number and check you don't have it saved twice somehow could be under a different name or two numbers under the same name... (could also be saved on the simcard and on your google account)

Thanks. I have actually deleted every trace of her accounts from my accounts phone. I only save my contacts on my phone and link them to facebook. Neither of us has our telephone number on facebook, so I do not see how there could be duplicate records of any entry, but I can try and see if I can dig something out. Before getting our Sensation XE three days ago we had an HTC Desire each and all our contacts showed OK.

Now I can see her name and details when she calls or I call, but not when she texts me. She can see all my details fine...

After I faced this problem where the SMS was showing number not the contact name that were saved in mobile... I just tried switching off and on .. But later tried the option of " Restart" - "close all apps and restart phone ".

After this ...my msg were normal reflecting with names'''
