Sup guys. Well lets just say I have a gnex in hand. I'm unlocked and rooted. Battery life is horrid as we all know.

Anyway what's the best rom and kernel for battery life. A lil how to would be nice as well.

CodenameAndroid is very nice in every way. Few if any bugs. Im itching to try something new and i have been hearing some good things about TranquilIce v6. As far as kernels go, I have found that Franco's are some of the best. Imoseyon's are good as well.

Yeah you always want to flash ROM first because most of them come with a kernel and will overwrite if you flash kernel first

While I (sort of) agree, he gives credit. And while this practice may be a bit questionable, we do have to remember we are in the open source world. It is not like these tweaks and customizations are trade secrets.

I don't understand this whatsoever. Do you realize what AOKP stands for? Android Open KANG Project, that's pretty self-explanatory.

My phone gets ridiculous battery life with LeanKernel and the InteractiveX scaling.

How-To is easy: flash the latest version of LeanKernel in CWM, then load up SetCPU, and select "interactivex" as scaling.

The "x" version unplugs one of the CPU cores when the screen is off.

The best rom, imo is aokp (toro beta series and milestone), used together with the LeanKernal.

I've flashed a lot of stuff.

1) All roms have a lot features and moreso with each passing week, but this one has stays a bit ahead of others.

2) Fab's rom is very good. I beta tested it yesterday. I would have stayed on it, but his flashlight toggle isnt working yet, and I do use it to navigate around nightime.

3) Someone already redemption. IT's good. GummyNex, Rootzwiki.

I recommend them all, with AOKP nosing the others out.

I would stay away P3's rom as there was too much broken and it alters too much. For example, I'm not a fan of the 4.0.3 radio. It flashes the radio without giving you a choice not to. It also flashes an out of date recovery beta. I have my own recovery, beta 5 with my picture on it, it flashes me back to beta 3. So, I don't like it.

I agree with Steven on trying them all. I've been on Redemption Rom with Lean Kernel for the last few weeks. I like it. I like Redemption Rom 1.0.2 the best because it is the closest to AOSP which is what i want. I don't really need any extra features at the moment. I just want a good optimized stock rom which is basically what RR 1.0.2 is.

What is wrong with the updated radio Steven? I understand what you mean about the bootloader.

So when I flash another rom, I guess I will have to flash the old radio correct? Is there a download for that someplace?

yes, there's a link to flashable radios in the root guide. I just didn't find a difference in teh radio, in fact, I felt that it wasn't as good in some place.

As for p3's rom.. some of the stuff just doesn't work... it's bad memories back from the DX days .. His rom was my first soft brick. It was a bad rom but at least I learned how to restore.

Fab's rom is working flawlessly for me, it's very fast, has a lot of options and has been giving me great battery life. I haven't tried the flashlight toggle since I use an app from the Market with a widget on my home screen for the flash light.

I'm running Gummy and I so far have found it the perfect mix of REALLY nifty features and not dicking around too much stuff.

The home screen rotate works perfect, I love that you can pick 4 different notification battery icons without flashing anything or even rebooting.

It provides performance tweaks and stuff also.

Mostly, you have to decide what your interested in.

do you just want streamlined stock? (sounds like redemption fits this)
do you want bleeding edge tweaks? (Kang or AKOP )
do you want tweaks but on a more modesty scale? (I think this is Gummy)
do you want customized everything? (this would be P3's tranquility rom)

These are my guesses, YMMV...

I ended up ditching p3's rom last night. Battery life was nice and I did not have any probs with the radio, however the thing that killed it for me was lag going into the app drawer. I know animations are quirky still on ICS but it was just annoying. This happened with both stock and nova launchers. I assume that since flashing a rom does not change the radio, I am still on p3's correct? If I run into problems, is there a recommended radio that I should flash back to at some point?

So last night I flashed the Redemption ROM 1.0.4 and the Leankernel 1.6.6. All I can say is wow, what a difference. Battery life today (light use Id say). Just a few emails and a handful of texts in over three hours and I am at 89%. Not bad so far. This is with the extended battery (which came yesterday and I installed last night). Next thing I need to do is re-familiarize myself with setcpu (or ask around here) on how to tweak things for even better battery life.

Thanks for hitting me back. I was going to flash gummynex last night (I loved gummyjar on the dx) but heard about battery life probs, so am holding off for now.

Funny that path you mentioned, but that is what I was thinking in my head. I chose redemption (for now). But feel that I may need to install nova launcher since I do not like the google search bar taking up space on my home screens.

Is nova on the market yet, or just flash in cwr only?

Also, what cwr are you guys using? Im still using rom manager just cos its easy.

It doesn't matter that he's giving them credit. Open source is about developers working together to make a great end product. If someone cherry picks source and doesn't give anything back to make it better then that's kanging. That's what the issue with Codename is right now. He is taking the developers hard work, not contributing anything of his own and then standing behind open source saying it's ok.

You can't have it both ways. Either open source is okay and people are allowed to do with the code what they want to, or it's not that way.

The guy is, absolutely, cherry picking the stuff he thinks is most useful and putting together a ROM. So what? If I were playing with ROM development and didn't want to roll my own from scratch, I'd probably do the same thing - and why shouldn't I post it for people to benefit? What if they like my choice of features more than AKOP?

I just don't see the problem here. The developers are posting their code for other people to use, and he is using it, while giving them credit.

Hey man that is all I need to do? Do I have to create a profile etc? Been a LONG time since I tweaked with settings on SetCPU, so don't want to hose my phone.

Im running the LeanKernel 1.6.6 currently.

I use the default profile (which is slightly undervolted). You can create a new profile if you want, but you don't have to.

So... yeah. I just installed LeanKernel, launch SetCPU, and select "interactivex" as scaling. Try it out. I now have it set on boot now, but ran it for several days first to make sure it wouldn't cause problems.

My battery life drops about 1-2% per hour when the phone is idle (screen off). That includes all the normal background syncing like Gmail, Facebook, weather getting updated every 30 minutes, etc.

When I plug the phone in at night (unplugged at 7am, plugged in at 11pm or later), I usually have 30% or more. Screen on time is usually over 2 hours (varies a lot depending on the day).

Wow man that is awesome! What is the default profile? You mean the stock gnex settings or is that a setcpu thing? Sorry for the noobness.

What rom are you running? I am using Redemption 1.0.4 with LeanKernel 1.6.6 and so far today I am at maybe nine and a half hours and 47% battery left. Not bad, but if using the above setting you mentioned can give me some more, I may just go for it.
